RECAP: #4 Bellarmine Overpowers Bulldogs 89-77

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Bellarmine (Ky.) Knights, ranked fourth in the NCAA Division II, defeated the Truman Women's Basketball team 89-77 on Saturday afternoon in Pershing Arena.
 
Raven Merriweather led all scorers with 28 points while Truman got 20 from Cassidy Clark. Bellarmine moved to 14-1 overall and 6-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference and Truman falls to 8-8 and 3-4 in league.
 
How It Happened:
  • The Knights never trailed as they jumped on top 7-0 but Brooke Bailey's three-pointer tied the score at nine three minutes into the contest.
  • Ashley Hartwig's bucket with 28 seconds left in the first made it 28-23 in favor of the visiting team.
  • Hartwig tied it again at 28 apiece as Truman scored the first five points of the second quarter.
  • Merriweather scored on consecutive trips to put the Knights up by seven midway through the second.
  • Following Destony Curry's three-pointer at the 5:29 mark, the Bulldogs held the Knights with six empty possessions the rest of the quarter. BU was 0-of-3 with three turnovers.
  • However, after Hartwig's bucket with 4:23 remaining, Truman went 0-of-7 from the field and could not trim into the lead.
  • Bellarmine lead by 13 at half 46-33 with neither team scoring over the final 3:25.
  • Merriweather was 7-of-7 in the first half with two three-pointers and Kelsey Adwell was 4-of-4 off the bench in the first half.
  • Clark was limited to two points in only four minutes of action in the first 20 minutes due to foul issues.
  • Truman had chances to get the lead below 10 in the third quarter after Sloane Totta's three-pointer to open the half but came up empty at the foul line and from distance in their next two possessions.
  • Katie Downey's hoop gave Bellarmine their largest lead 69-32 near the end of the quarter.
  • A 10-2 run by Truman with three-pointers from Eleanor Lueke and Totta got the lead down to 10 at 83-73 with 1:26 left, however baskets from Whitney Hartlage and Beth Bowers pushed the margin out to 14 and sealed the win.
 
Key Stats/Game Notes:
  • Merriweather finished with 28 points on 12-of-14 shooting and four triples, she added four assists.
  • Adwell and Curry each added 16 with Adwell going 6-of-7 from the field and Curry 5-of-9.
  • Clark scored 18 of her 20 points in the second half going 7-of-9 from the field and 6-of-9 from the stripe.  It was Clark's fifth 20+ game this season and third in the last four games.
  • Hartwig tallied 14 points and went over the 500 career point mark at Truman as a junior.
  • The Knights shot 73% in the first quarter and finished at 57% for the game.
  • Bellarmine's leading scoring coming into the game, Sarah Galvin (16.0 ppg) was limited to two points on 0-of-7 shooting and three turnovers. Galvin was the GLVC Tournament MVP last season and a first-team all-conference player.
  • Truman shot 45% overall and 37% from three.
  • Each team had six three-pointers and 16 turnovers, however Bellarmine had 12 steals to Truman's six.
  • Bellarmine won their third straight over the Bulldogs.
 
Up Next:
The Bulldogs will make a swing through the St. Louis area next weekend. Truman will be in Chesterfield and Maryville University at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday then move up the road to Bridgeton and the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.
