NOTES: Road Tour Nears End At Missouri-St. Louis

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – For the fifth time in a little over a year the Truman Women's Basketball team and the University of Missouri-St. Louis will be meeting on the hardcourt. This time the scene shifts to St. Louis when the Bulldogs and Tritons tip off at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Both teams are coming off wins on Thursday night. Truman dispatched Maryville 69-54 behind Sloane Totta's nine assists and 12 points while the Tritons broke a three-game losing skid with a 57-47 victory over Quincy at home.

The Bulldogs and Tritons played four times during the 2016 calendar year with Truman winning the games that mattered the most. UMSL won 61-60 in double-overtime, a non-conference affair on January 2, 2016. Truman returned the favor 20 days later with a 78-73 overtime win in the GLVC game played between the two schools. They would meet again on February 28, the first round of the GLVC Postseason Tournament with the Bulldogs prevailing 59-51 to advance.

This season, the teams again played a non-conference game in Kirksville on December 19 and the Tritons rallied from 10 points down to win 80-70. Laura Szorenyi cut the cords for 24 points including four three-pointers while Shelby Dahl, Robneisha Lee, Shawnta Johnson and Chelsey Jacox all scored 12 points apiece.  The Tritons shot 60% in the second half, going 4-of-9 from three while Truman managed just one three-pointer in the final 20 minutes and shot 38% from the field in the second half. Cassidy Clark led Truman with 18 points and pulled down seven rebounds.

After today's game, Truman will have completed the first half of the conference schedule (nine games) with seven of those games being on the road. Starting next week, Truman will embark on a four-game home stand and will finish with seven of their final nine games in Pershing Arena.

Following this trip, seven of the final nine games will be played in the friendly confines of Pershing Arena but standing in the way will be the Saints on Thursday followed by the University of Missouri-St. Louis on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs jumped into third place with their win at Maryville on Thursday. They are 4-4 in the GLVC West trailing Drury (8-0) and Rockhurst (6-2) in the division. UMSL is a game behind the Bulldogs at 3-5 in the GLVC with William Jewell sandwiched inbetween with a 3-4 league record.

Truman is averaging 71.9 points per game while giving up 65.1 points. The Bulldogs are shooting 41% overall, 31% from long range and 71% from the line. In conference games, Truman scores 69.2 points per game and have allowed 66.5. Shooting wise in league, the Bulldogs hit 40% of their shots, 28% from range and 68.4% at the line.

The Starting Five:
Senior Cassidy Clark scored in double-figures for the 20th time in her career and 14th time this season with 14 points on Thursday night. Over the last five games, Clark has averaged 19 points and shot 60% from the floor. She is third in conference-only scoring at 18.3 points per night, trailing Lewis' Jessica Kelliher (22.9) and Rockhurst Mary Dineen (18.8).Clark's season shooting percentage of 55.3% would be third best in Truman single-season history behind Carol Jarrard's 1979 mark of 59.9% and Georgia Mueller's 2008 56.4% if the season ended right now.

Joining Clark in the starting five this season has been junior Ashley Hartwig (10.1 ppg/5.9 rpg), sophomores Brooke Bailey (8.8 ppg/2.5 apg) and Rachel Edmundson (12.1 ppg/4.9 rpg) and freshman Sloane Totta (7.0 ppg/2.5 apg).

Hartwig is fifth in the GLVC in overall free throw percentage at 83.6% and is ranked 16th in rebounding at 5.9 per contest. She was in double-figures in both games last week with 11 against USI and 14 against Bellarmine.

Bailey has averaged 3.3 assists in the eight conference games this year with six dimes apiece in games against Illinois Springfield and McKendree. She is the team's leading three-point shooter with 30 makes this season. Bailey scored a season-high 16 points in the Bulldogs league win at Quincy on December 10.

???????Edmundson is second on the team in scoring at 12.1 points and has been the team's leading scorer in five games this year. She scored 27 points in a loss at Missouri Southern on November 22. Edmunson is second in three-pointers with 25 and shoots 35% from distance.

???????Totta has started every game as a true freshman and has made 18 three-pointers and dished out 43 assists. She has scored in double figures in her last two games, including 12 points and a Truman season-high nine assists against Maryville.  

Off The Bench:
Freshman Eleanor Lueke has the highest minutes average of any bench player this season and is the only other player outside of the starting five that has appeared in all 17 games. She make one start, against Iowa Wesleyan on December 31 and is averaging 5.3 points per game with a season high of 11 against two opponents.

Junior transfer Jamie Gleeson has been involved in 16 games and is averaging 8.8 minutes and 2.8 points per game. She scored a season-high seven points last Saturday against Bellarmine and had two blocks against Illinois Springfield on January 5.

Junior Montira Mosby and sophomores Kennedy Martin and Sam Andrews provided minutes in a majority of the games off the bench. Mosby averages 12.9 minutes in 14 games played and 3.9 points per game mark. Her season high is 11 against Oklahoma Panhandle State on November 26. Martin has played around seven minutes per her 15 games this season with 10 of her 20 rebounds coming on the offensive end. Andrews has averaged 9.8 minutes in 14 games and has scored 3.9 points per game.

 About Missouri-St. Louis
The Tritons held their third opponent this season under 50 points in their 10-point 57-47 win over Quincy on Thursday. That broke a three-game losing skid, with all three losses coming on the road. Laura Szorenyi scored 20 points, the third 20-point game this season to lead UMSL. Both Quincy and UMSL scored nine points in the third quarter and 22 points in the second half.
It was a 23-14 second quarter that proved to be the difference.

UMSL's other conference wins have come at Missouri S&T 68-65 and at home against Saint Joseph's 54-53.

???????Szorenyi leads the Tritons in scoring at 14.8 points per game and is shooting 38% from distance going 19-of-50. Jordan Fletcher (12.7 ppg), Robneisha Lee (9.2 ppg), Shelby Dahl (5.3 ppg) and Sammie Sproul (4.1 ppg) have all started the previous 16 games.

The Tritons score 60.7 points and give up 60.6 points while shooting 40% overall, 29% from three and 71% from the foul line. Opponents shoot 42% from the field, 34% from three and 68% at the charity stripe. UMSL has averaged 17.4 turnovers per game.

Series History:
Only one game separates Truman and Missouri-St. Louis in the all-time series between the two schools. The Bulldogs have that edge 19-18 with the series dating back to 1975. The bulk of the games took place when the two schools were members of the MIAA but the series came to an abrupt end in 1996 when the Tritons left for the GLVC.

It resumed with the Bulldogs joining the conference in 2014 and the eight games have been split with four wins apiece.

???????Maryville Recap:
  • The Bulldogs led wire-to-wire for third time this season in the 69-54 win over the Saints.
  • Truman scored just four seconds into the contest as Cassidy Clark scored to start things for the Bulldogs.
  • The Bulldogs led 17-7 after one as they forced six Maryville turnovers and shot 41% from the field.
  • Maryville's Mary Barton's three-pointer got the Saints back to within four at 19-15 midway through the second but Sam Andrews answered with a three on the next Bulldog possession.
  • The Saints never got closer than that with Truman taking a seven-point lead into the locker room at half 29-22.
  • The two teams exchanged three-pointers again in the third quarter with Alex Wolf's triple cutting the lead down to five but Eleanor Lueke fired back for Truman.
  • The Bulldogs scored their final 13 points from the foul line and outscored the Saints 13-4 over the final 3:26.
  • Totta had nine of Truman's 18 assists and finished 12 points, seven of which came at the free throw line.
  • The nine dimes were the most by a Bulldog since Allie Norton had nine against William Jewell on January 22, 2015.
  • Truman had 18 assists on 22 made baskets. It was a season high for the team and most by the Bulldogs since had 19 in a victory over Hannibal-LaGrange in November 2015.
  • Cassidy Clark finished with 14 points on 7-of-13 shooting and Rachel Edmundson added 13 on a pair of three-pointers and a 7-of-8 performance from the line.
  • The two teams shot identical 22-of-51 from the floor however Truman made three more three-pointers and outscored the Saints by 12 at the foul line.
  • The Bulldogs grabbed 12 more rebounds than the Saints 37-25.
  • Mary Barton for Maryville scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half and was joined in double figures by Ali Ringering (15) and Ellen Foster (10).
Around the GLVC:
Drury holds a two-game lead in the West Division with an 8-0 record while Bellarmine and Southern Indiana share the top spot in the East at 7-1. Lewis upset #4 Bellarmine on Thursday night to claw back to within a game of the lead.

The Flyers' sophomore Jessica Kelliher scored a GLVC season best 38 points on 18-of-19 shots on Saturday against Maryville and leads the conference in scoring at 22.9 points in eight league games and 20.4 points overall. Rockhurst senior Mary Dineen is second in scoring overall at 18.6 points followed by Lewis senior Jamie Johnson at 18.4 points.

The two division champions followed by the next two best conference winning percentages get first round byes in the GLVC Tournament. The next four teams (5-8) will host 9-12 in on-campus games on Sunday, February 26.

Up Next:
The cure for homesickness is on the horizon, Truman will return to Pershing Arena for four straight and seven of their final nine games beginning on Thursday night against division leader Drury. The Lady Panthers have won all 10 meetings with Truman.
