KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - In their final event of the 2016-17 regular season, the Truman swimming programs split with No. 7 Washington-St. Louis of Division III as the men came up short, 140-122, and the women finished on top, 145-117.
With the Great Lakes Valley Conference Swimming & Diving Championships next on the list (Feb. 8-11), the men's dual record fell to 4-6 while the women's improved to 7-2. The males took home first place in eight events while the females were on top of the podium in seven events of their own. Sophomore,
Sam Heveroh led the way for the men with three victories while
Evyn Spencer made her last meet in Pershing Natatorium a good one with three wins as well.
The men dominated the freestyle races as six of their eight victories came in that department. Individually, five wins came from
Lliot Gieseke in the 50 (21.55), Heveroh in the 100 (47.01), Heveroh in the 200 (1:44.55),
JT Thayer in the 500 (4:45.32), and Thayer in the 1000 (9:45.35). The sixth belonged to the 200 relay team made up of Heveroh,
Neil Girmus, Gieseke, and
Austin Baker with a time of 1:24.70. The men's final two wins came from Girmus in the 100 breast (59.12) and
Will Shanel in the 200 IM (1:56.19).
For the women, the seven wins consisted of two in the freestyle category, two in the backstroke, two in the butterfly, and one in the individual medley. Spencer took home first place in the 100 back (58.99), the 100 fly (58.70) and the 200 IM (2:09.93).
Emma Barnett was the fastest finisher in both the 200 back (2:06.03) and the 500 free (5:11.61). Last but certainly not least,
Jasmine Roghair was the best in the 1000 free (10:26.45) and
Maggie Hickey beat everyone in the 200 fly (2:10.28).
As mentioned above, the teams now turn their attention to the conference championships, which will take place in Crawfordsville, Ind. at the
Crawfordsville High School Aquatics Center. A preview for the event will be available in the days leading up to that meet right here at
