KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - After giving up a goal to Bellarmine in just the 13th minute on Friday afternoon at Bulldog Soccer Park, the Truman State University men's soccer team toughened up over time. The Bulldogs didn't surrender another score the rest of the way, got a penalty-kick score from
Matt Yankowitz in the 80th minute and played to a 1-1 draw with the Knights.
It was the first tie of the season for Truman (3-10-1, 2-8-1 GLVC) as well as Bellarmine (7-4-1, 5-4-1 GLVC). The Knights' goal came off the foot of Tomas Bernedo and he was assisted by Jonas Skulstad. For the Bulldogs, that gives Yankowitz three goals for the year and seven for his career.
In goal for the Purple and White,
Jory Knernschield got the start and played the first 76:54 with seven saves and one goal allowed before giving way to
Zac Suazo's two saves in the final 33:06. Knernschield faced nine shots and Suazo was opposed by three of them.
Truman's nine shots came from six players, all of which were starters, and Yankowitz led the way with three to his name. For shots on goal, Yankowitz was responsible for two while
Michael Ruzicka and
Trevor Kaufmann each had one.
In the team head-to-head, the Bulldogs trailed the Knights in shots (13-9) and shots on goal (11-4), but the hosts held the upper hand in corner kicks (4-3).
Next up, Truman will host Indianapolis on Sunday at 1 p.m. for Senior Day 2017.
