KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State University men's and women's swimming teams started their 2017-18 campaigns with a bang on Friday night as they swept visiting Missouri-St. Louis and Maryville inside Pershing Natatorium. The men defeated the Tritons, 113-73, and the Saints, 146-26, while the women followed suit with scores of 142-43 and 142-28, respectively.
On the women's side, the Bulldogs won all 11 of the events they competed in while the men were winners in seven of their 11 events.
Starting with the women, they took first place in the 200 yard medley relay (1:49.54) with the team of
Grace Fodor,
Natalie Galluzzo,
Libby Opfer, and
Nikki Sisson as well as the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:39.74) thanks to N. Sisson,
Jamie Fitzpatrick, Opfer, and Fodor.
For the individual races, the women took home the top thre places in three events including the 50 free, 200 IM and 200 back. For the 50 free, those top three were Fitzpatrick (24.82), Opfer (25.18) and
Loriel Hutchinson (25.59). In the 200 IM, the top three belonged to Galluzzo (2:13.11),
Annika Hofer (2:15.10) and
Allison Garrett (2:15.67). Lastly, for the 200 back, it was
Emma Barnett (2:07.89), Fodor (2:11.61) and
Lauren Massot (2:12.01).
Aside from those finishes, the Purple and White's other winners included
Kortney Betz in the 1000 free (11:02.94), N. Sisson in the 200 free (1:55.43),
Maggie Hickey in the 200 fly (2:11.31), Fitzpatrick in the 100 free (53.98),
Mikayla Kempf in the 500 free (5:21.36), and
Ginny Schranck in the 200 breast (2:32.13).
Switching over to the men, they took first place in both relays with the team of
Will Shanel,
Mark Franz,
Caleb Kruse, and
Sam Heveroh in the 200 yard medley relay (1:34.80) followed by the quartet of Heveroh,
Lliot Gieseke,
Austin Baker, and Kruse in the 200 yard freestyle relay (1:26.24).
When it comes to the individual events, the Bulldogs' five winners included
JT Thayer in the 200 free (1:44.47), Heveroh in the 50 free (21.18), Shanel in the 200 IM (1:58.08),
Austin Mayer in the 200 fly (1:57.34), and
Andrew Smith in the 200 breast (2:14.71).
Next up on the schedule, both programs will face off against Lindenwood on Saturday with the action set to begin at 1 p.m.
