KENOSHA, Wis. - The Truman State University men's soccer team was on the road Friday afternoon for the second-to-last match of the regular season and thanks to solid goalkeeping and goals from a pair of rookies, the Bulldogs defeated Wisconsin-Parkside, 2-0.
Truman (4-11-1, 3-9-1 GLVC) has won or tied two of its last three matches while Wisconsin-Parkside (4-9-1, 4-7-1 GLVC) has dropped three of its past four.
Freshman,
Mateo Montano, didn't take long to make his presence felt for the Bulldogs and after officially joining the team this past week, he put the Purple and White ahead 1-0 on Friday with a goal in the 28th minute. Montano's blast from 18 yards out was assisted by
Trevor Kaufmann, his second of the year, but the good guys were just getting started.
Just over 14 minutes later in the 42nd, another freshman,
Ian McCluskey, found the back of the net for the first time in his career after beating the goalkeeper 1-on-1. Assisting the newcomer on the score was
Sean Appelbaum with his first-career helper.
That was all the scoring
Jory Knernschield and
Zac Suazo needed and more in goal. Knernschield got the start with 61 minutes played and four saves on 10 shots faced while Suazo played the final 29 minutes with two stops on five attempts faced.
In the team head-to-head, Truman was out-shot by five, 15-10, but the shots on goal were tied, 6-6, and the Bulldogs had the upper hand in corner kicks, 5-4. Individually, the Purple and White's 10 looks came from seven different players as
Joel Reft, McCluskey and Montano led the way with two apiece.
Next up, Truman will be at Lewis on Sunday for the 2017 regular-season finale and a 2:30 p.m. start from Romeoville, Ill.
