RECAP: Truman Suffers First-Ever Loss to Illinois Springfield

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - Prior to Tuesday night in Pershing Arena, the Truman State University volleyball program had never suffered a defeat at the hands of Illinois Springfield (6-0). The Prairie Stars ended said streak by sweeping the Bulldogs in their last home match until Oct. 27 vs. Indianapolis.

Truman (6-10, 2-5 GLVC) has now dropped three-straight matches while Illinois Springfield (10-6, 4-3 GLVC) has won two in a row (both in straight sets) and four of its last six. Tuesday, the Bulldogs were led by Jasmine Brown (13 kills), Savvy Hughes (34 assists), Lauren Wacker (15 digs), and Natalie Brimeyer (three blocks).

How it happened...
  • The first set was the tightest one of the night as it saw a combined nine ties and five lead changes.
  • Truman scored the first point of the night and despite the three ties that followed, pushed its advantage to three, 8-5.
  • Illinois Springfield proceeded to score 10 of the next 14 points, was ahead by three, 15-12, and the home team used a timeout.
  • After the Bulldogs knotted things up at 15-15 with three-straight points, the visitors ended the set with a 10-5 spurt that put the set away, 25-20.
  • The hosts controlled the action early on in the second set to the tune of 6-2 through the first eight points.
  • However, the away team answered right away with four straight and it was tied back up at 6-6.
  • Four of the next five in favor of Truman put it ahead by three, 10-7, and Illinois Springfield called a timeout.
  • After four more ties, the final one being 13-13, the Bulldogs went ahead by three, 16-13, as part of four-straight scores.
  • However, the Prairie Stars rattled off eight of the following nine points and were ahead by four, 21-17.
  • After that, the Purple and White slimmed the margin to one twice (22-21 and 23-22), but never got closer than that before the final set margin of three, 25-22.
  • Truman was first on the board in the third set before Illinois Springfield tallied four straight to go up by three.
  • The Bulldogs punched back though and eventually took the lead, 9-8.
  • Five more ties came and went before the Prairie Stars used a 9-3 run to go ahead by six, 22-16.
  • After that, the Purple and White were within two three times, but the visitors won the set 25-22 and the match in straight sets.
Next up, Truman will travel to Wisconsin-Parkside on Friday with first serve set for 7 p.m. from Kenosha, Wis.
