EVANSTON, Ill. - The Truman State University men's and women's swimming teams finished up their successful three-day stay at Northwestern University's TYR Invitational on Sunday at the Norris Aquatics Center. The men finished in sixth with 372 points while the women came in at seventh with 252 points.
Starting with the men's side, the action was highlighted by what junior,
Sam Heveroh (pictured), was able to do. Heveroh won the 100 IM with a time of 51.14 and placed second in the 100 free by lowering his school record to 44.67. The St. Louis native was joined in the 100 free by
Lliot Gieseke in 10th (45.96),
JT Thayer in 19th (46.63) and
Austin Baker in 20th (46.93).
Heveroh was also part of the 400 free relay team along with Baker, Thayer, and Gieseke that took home fourth with a time of 3:01.89 that was just off the school record of 3:03.26.
The Bulldogs had a flurry of finishers in the 200 breast that were led by
Austin Bell in 13th with a time of 2:08.83. Behind the freshman were
Andrew Smith in 14th (2:09.77/season best),
Joel Schawe in 17th (2:11.72),
Keegan Miller in 18th (2:12.53/season best),
Derek Mielke in 21st (2:15.03/season best), and
Jake O'Bryan in 24th (2:19.13/season best).
Will Shanel also had a busy final session as he placed fifth in the 200 fly (1:49.93/NCAA B-cut) and 20th in the 200 back (1:54.58). In the 200 fly, he was joined by
Austin Mayer in 12th (1:52.24) and
Justin King in 18th (1:51.87). Both Mayer and King were just off their personal bests with those marks. Also competing in the 200 back for the Purple and White were
Brenden Harris in 19th (1:54.56) and
Riley Brown in 24th (2:00.59).
Last, but not least, for the men was
Caleb Kruse and a fifth-place finish in the 50 fly with a time of 22.40.
On the women's side, Truman got top-10 finishes in the 1650 free, 100 free, 200 breast, 100 IM, and 400 free relay. In the 1650 free,
Megan Mensinger lowered her previous best by 25 seconds to 17:19.26 (ninth place) while
Shannon Dague was right behind her at 17:20.58 (10th).
For the 100 free,
Nikki Sisson paced the squad in eighth (51.60) and
Jamie Fitzpatrick wasn't far back with a personal best time of 51.95 in 12th.
Libby Opfer (53.09) and
Loriel Hutchinson (54.36) both set personal bests in the prelim session as well.
The Bulldogs' best finish of the day for the women came from
Natalie Galluzzo in the 200 breast where she was seventh with a time of 2:18.25 (personal best).
Ginny Schranck also competed in that event and ranked 19th at 2:22.48, just off her personal best.
The final two top-10 showings came from
Allison Garrett in the 100 IM (ninth/59.26) and the team of N. Sisson, Opfer,
Grace Fodor, and Fitzpatrick in the 400 free relay (ninth/3:30.52).
The Purple and White came up with three finishers in the 200 back, all of which were just off their personal bests, including
Emma Barnett in 12th (2:04.32),
Lauren Massot in 19th (2:06.47) and
Mikayla Kempf in 22nd (2:08.36). In the 50 fly, for Truman, it was
Maggie Hickey in 17th (26.06) and
Kaylee Sisson in 24th (27.25). Lastly, finishing for the Bulldogs in the 200 fly were Hickey in 19th (2:07.40) and
Kortney Betz in 21st (2:09.26), who was just off her personal best.
Next up, Truman gets a Thanksgiving break before traveling to Western Illinois on Saturday, Dec. 2 with action set to begin at 12 p.m. in Macomb, Ill.
