KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Bulldog Women return to Lee Arena in Topeka, Kansas for the first time in five seasons as they will compete against Newman University and Washburn University in the Parrish Hotels Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday.

Truman will open the classic with the first-ever match-up with the Newman Jets at 5 p.m. on Friday. Newman is 5-2 on the young season and are coming off a huge home upset over #11 Emporia (Kan.) State on Monday night 74-66. The Jets were 19-10 last season.

On Saturday, Truman takes on a team that has been a thorn in their side during the MIAA years. Washburn has a commanding 42-9 record over the Bulldogs with Head Coach Ron McHenry boasting a 24-3 all-time mark against Truman. The Bulldogs last win in the series came in Topeka when they upended the Ichabods 68-66 in 2011. The teams last played in 2013 with Washburn winning at home 52-47.

About the Bulldogs:
Truman is 2-1 after a dominating 67-31 win over Missouri Southern last Saturday. Ashley Hartwig led Truman with 13 points on 5-of-13 shooting and added three assists while Rachel Steinhoff scored 11 points. The Bulldogs held Southern to under 10 points in three of the four quarters played and the lowest point total (31) by a Division II opponent since they gave up only 23 to Missouri S&T in January 2002.
The Bulldogs forced the Lions into 23 turnovers and Southern shot 20% for the game, 23% from the line and had just seven two-point baskets in the game.
For the season, Truman is averaging 67 points offensively and allowing 56. The Bulldogs shoot 36% from the floor, 31% from the arc and 82% from the foul line, six of the 10 Bulldogs that have taken free throws this season have not missed at the line with freshman Katie Jaseckas (9-of-9) and junior Rachel Edmundson (8-of-8) having the two most attempts by any player.
Brooke Bailey has come off the bench to lead Truman in scoring at 10.7 points per game although Truman has had three different high scorers in each of the three games. Bailey has connected on six of 14 three-point attempts (42%). Ashley Hartwig (9.3 ppg) has the most shot attempts with 31 and is tied for the team high in assists with six. Jaseckas (8.3 ppg) leads the team in boards at eight per night and is shooting 53% from the field.

The Starting Five:
Truman has used the same starting lineup for the first three games. Seniors Ashley Hartwig, Remy Davenport (3.0 ppg), junior Rachel Edmundson (6.7 ppg), sophomore Sloane Totta (6.0 ppg) and freshman Katie Jaseckas. The starters have been on the floor together a total of roughly 15 out of the 600 total minutes played so far. Truman has used 70 different lineup combinations through the first three games.

Hello Newman:
Newman opened the season with four straight wins before setbacks in overtime to Nebraska-Kearney 79-74 and 76-63 to Fort Hays State this past weekend…they bounced back Monday dumping #11 Emporia State at home 74-66…a 7-0 burst midway through the fourth quarter broke a 53-all tie and lifted the Jets to the upset…Bria DeGrate led Newman with 20 points with 12 coming from the foul line and Haley Alberts totaled 14 points…for the season, four players are scoring in double-figurers led by Hannah Alexander at 12.9 and DeGrate at 11.6…Newman is averaging 75.9 points per game, shooting 44% overall, 34% from three with seven triples per game and 77% at the foul line…the are forcing nearly 20 turnovers per game.

Washburn Wisdom:
Since Truman last saw Washburn in 2013, the Ichabods have had four-straight non-20 win seasons and have been eliminated from the MIAA Postseason tournament in the first round in each year…the Ichabods were 17-12 last season which was the highest win total of the past four years…Washburn is 4-0 this season with Division II wins over Minnesota State (78-65), Mary (78-67/ot) and Rockhurst of the GLVC 64-62…Washburn is averaging 85 points per game while allowing 57, they shoot 47% from the field, 42% from three with 8.8 made per game and 72% at the line…Mackenzie Loe leads the 'bods in scoring at 16.8 points per game and is shooting 60% from the field…Reagan Phelan is next at 12.8 per night and is one of three players with six made three-pointers…Axelle Bernard is the top rebounder at 8.8 per game and is averaging 10.8 points.

Coaches Polls
Truman was picked second in the Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division and had one first-place vote among the five teams. The Bulldogs were 15-13 last season and 10-8 in the conference. Newman was slotted fifth in the eight team Heartland Conference poll. Washburn was picked eighth in the MIAA Preseason poll  and finished last season with a 17-12 overall record and 10-9 count in conference.

Around The GLVC
Three teams remain undefeated in the Great Lakes Valley Conference entering the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Southern Indiana (4-0) and Bellarmine (3-0) reside in the East Division while Missouri S&T (4-0) is the other perfect team in the West. Six other teams, including Truman have only one loss.
The GLVC Player of the Week was Morgan Dahlstrom from Southern Indiana. Dahlstrom averaged 17 points 8.5 rebounds in a pair of wins over Ohio Dominican and Wayne (Mich.) State.

Returning All-GLVC
Junior forward Rachel Edmundson was a second team all-GLVC player last year and sophomore guard Sloane Totta was named to the All-Freshman team. Edmundson averaged 12.3 points a night and shot 37% from beyond the arc and 76% from the foul line. Totta was the assists' leader for Truman with 81 in 28 games and scored 7.4 points per game.

Academic All-GLVC
Seven Truman players earned the Academic All-GLVC award following last season. They were Rachel Edmundson, Jamie Gleeson, Ashley Hartwig, Taylor Koper, Rachel Steinhoff, Maddie Tharp and Sloane Totta. To earn Academic All-GLVC accolades, a player must have a 3.30 grade-point average over the academic year.
In addition, Koper, Steinhoff and Totta earned the GLVC Brother James Gaffney Distinguished Scholar award for posting 4.0 GPAs during the past academic year.

The Bulldogs will open up their fifth season of Great Lakes Valley Conference action next Saturday when they host Missouri-St. Louis. Tip off is set for 1 p.m.
