RECAP: Bulldogs Hold Off Griffons For Fourth Straight

Box Score (HTML)

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. – A pair of 20-point games by senior Ashley Hartwig and freshman Katie Jaseckas helped the Truman Bulldogs hold off Missouri Western 77-68 for their fourth straight victory.

Hartwig scored 21 points and added six rebounds while Jaseckas poured in 20 points, 13 in the fourth quarter, to go along with seven boards.

The home team led by three at 9-6 with 6:31 left in the first quarter before Truman held the Griffons scoreless for the rest of the first and scored 10 straight to lead 16-9. The Bulldogs expanded their margin to 14 points on a three-pointer by Sam Andrews midway through the second. Andrews finished three triples on the night.

Throughout the second half, Western chipped away at the lead and eventually got it down to two at 64-62 following a pair of free throws from Brittany Atkins. On Truman's next possession, senior Jamie Gleeson hit her first career Truman three-pointer. Gleeson was 0-for-9 from distance as a post player last season but her three pushed the lead back to five with 3:33 left to play.

Each team exchanged empty possessions following the three. After Truman's miss, Atkins tried to attack the basket was called for an offensive foul  which also drew the ire of the Griffon bench and led to a technical foul. Remy Davenport made one of two to extend the lead out to six.

The Griffons fought back on hoops by Atkins and Melia Richardson to pull back to two at 70-68 with a minute to play. After a timeout, Hartwig found Jaseckas again down low for her fourth field goal of the quarter and a four-point Truman advantage.

From there, Truman did just enough at the free throw line, making three of their final six while Western went scoreless in the final 60 seconds.

The Bulldogs shot 47% overall and were 5-of-17 from distance. Truman was an uncharacteristic 56% (14-of-25) from the free throw line after coming into the contest at over 80% and ranked 12th in Division II in free throw shooting.
Atkins and Savannah Lentz both scored 16 points apiece to lead the Griffons. It was only the third loss this season for Missouri Western and first in eight games at home.

It will be all conference games from here on out for Truman starting on January 4 with a home date with Missouri S&T.
