CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. - Just like the conclusion of the first three days of the 2017 GLVC Swimming & Diving Championships, the Truman men's and women's swimming teams finished in fourth (392 points) and second (790.5 points), respectively, when all was said and done on Saturday night. For the second-consecutive season, the men improved their final standing at the league meet by placing sixth in 2014, sixth in 2015, fifth in 2016, and fourth in 2017.
"Outstanding fourth day of the meet," said head coach
Ed Pretre. "Both teams showed lots of poise tonight and brought incredible energy. For the women to get second and the men to get fourth in one of the fastest conferences in the country is quite an accomplishment."
Drury was on top of the standings for both the men and women while Indianapolis placed third in both and Missouri S&T was the second-place squad on the men's side. On the final day for the Bulldogs, the two teams combined for 14 performances in the top eight, 11 NCAA B-cut marks, three new school records by the men, and a pair of one-two finishes by the women.
For the women, the one-two punches came in the 100 free and the 200 back, something pretty difficult to accomplish in a conference such as the GLVC. In the 100 free,
Alison Strickler was first (50.96 - B cut) and
Nikki Sisson was second (51.17 - B cut).
Evyn Spencer also took seventh in that event with a time of 52.13. For the 200 back,
Emma Barnett placed first and was clocked at 2:01.22 (B cut) while
Hannah Nicks was right behind her with a time of 2:01.46 (B cut).
Lauren Massot was the third top-eight finisher for Truman in the 200 back in sixth at 2:05.20.
In the 1650 free, the Purple and White had a trio of swimmers in the top eight including
Shannon Dague in fifth (17:20.65 - B cut),
Kortney Betz in sixth (17:34.46 - B cut) and
Jasmine Roghair in eighth (17:41.63). Last, but not least for the individuals in the top eight was
Ally Neumann touching the wall in sixth for the 200 breast with a mark of 2:24.22. In the 400 free relay, the team of Sisson,
Jamie Fitzpatrick, Strickler, and Spencer was second with a B-cut time of 3:25.34.
Switching gears to the men, they etched their name in the record books with three new marks in the 100 free, 200 back and 400 free relay. In the 100 free, it was
Sam Heveroh in fifth with a time of 44.88 (B cut) and
Will Shanel set the record for the 200 back in ninth with a time of 1:49.51 (B cut). The final record/B cut came from the quartet of
Neil Girmus,
Lliot Gieseke,
Austin Baker, and Heveroh in the 400 free relay with a finish of fourth at 3:01.46. The final top-eight finish for the men was by Girmus in the 200 breast with a time of 2:01.45 in fifth place.
The league also recognized 10 GLVC James R. Spalding Sportsmanship Award honorees. The student-athletes chosen are individuals who have distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior. These individuals must also be in good academic standing and have demonstrated good citizenship outside of the sports-competition setting. The honorees are now eligible to become one of their school's two Spalding Sportsmanship Award winners, which will be announced at the end of the academic year. Truman's two honorees were
Ben Sherman and
Grace Fodor.
Next up, the men and women will compete at the William Jewell Invite on Saturday, Feb. 18 before the field is selected for the NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships.
