RECAP: Truman Clinches Home Game With 68-63 Win Over Quincy

BOX SCORE (HTML)

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Cassidy Clark scored over 20 points for the third straight game and the Truman Women's Basketball team survived a scare from rival Quincy 68-63 in the regular season finale. The Bulldogs will host Maryville University on Sunday at 1 p.m. as the sixth seed in the Great Lakes Valley Conference postseason tournament.

Clark scored seven of Truman's first 14 points and the Bulldogs led by two at 14-12 at the end of the first. A 9-0 run by Quincy pushed the Lady Hawks on top during the second quarter and they led 31-26 at the halftime break.

The Bulldogs had only two three pointers in the first 20 minutes but Sloane Totta changed that in a span of 30 or so seconds in the third quarter. Totta knocked down triples on consecutive trips to put Truman on top for good at 35-31.

The third quarter belonged to the Bulldogs as they outscored the Lady Hawks 22-9. Truman shot 46% in the quarter compared to Quincy's 19%.

Truman led by eight to start the fourth and expanded the lead to 12 with 7:34 to play. The Lady Hawks chipped away and Selina Barnes made it four points with 3:51 to play.

Quincy couldn't capitalize on a turnover and Totta found a wide open Brooke Bailey under the hoop for an uncontested layup to give Truman some breathing room.

That didn't last long. Lauren Gronewold buried a three to make it 62-59 with under two minutes to play. Quincy got a stop on the defensive end but an offensive foul coupled with a technical foul on Gronewold gave Rachel Edmundson some free throws to extend the lead back out to five.

Nikia Edom scored to bring it back to three with 45 seconds left.

Truman worked both the game clock and shot clock down before Edmundson's putback with 16 seconds left put the Bulldogs up again by five. Totta would seal the win with two late free throws.

Clark, the reigning GLVC Player of the Week, scored 26 points on 10-of-18 shooting and added five rebounds. Totta added 11 points and Ashley Hartwig pulled down nine boards.

Quincy's season ends at 5-23 and 2-16 in the conference. Barnes had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds and Cha Cha Williams led the Lady Hawks in scoring with 13.

The win for Truman (15-12; 10-8 GLVC) secured a first round GLVC Tournament game and the number six seed overall. The Bulldogs will host Maryville University on Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in Pershing Arena. The Saints enter the tournament with an 12-13 record and an 8-10 league mark. Truman defeated Maryville 69-54 in St. Louis on January 19.
