SPRINGFIELD, Mo. - The Truman softball team was on the road Saturday for the third doubleheader in a row and this time, it was at Drury. The Bulldogs dropped a one-run affair in game one, 6-5, before rolling past the Panthers in the nightcap, 10-2.
Truman is now 22-14 overall including 5-5 in the GLVC while Drury sits at 16-17 on the season and 4-6 in league play. Saturday, the Bulldogs were led by freshman,
Alyssa Rivera (pictured). Rivera went 5-for-8 at the dish with three runs scored, one double, three RBI, six total bases, and two stolen bases in two attempts. The rookie third baseman is now hitting a red-hot .359 (42-for-117) and is second on the team to just
Christa Reisinger in runs scored with 25. Also against the Panthers,
Morgan McMahan had four hits while
Valerie Schmidt and Reisinger each chipped in three of their own.
In the first game, Truman scored the first two runs thanks to a
Lex Van Nostrand sacrifice fly in the first inning and an RBI groundout by McMahan in the third. However, in the bottom of the third, Drury put up a four spot to go up by two, 4-2. The Bulldogs would answer, though, with two in the fourth to tie it and one in the fifth to go ahead by one, 5-4. In the fourth, Schmidt singled in
Jamie Fowle and
Kadie Orenstein hit a sacrifice fly to center that brought in Schmidt. One inning later, Van Nostrand was at it again with an RBI double to right center.
In the sixth, the Purple and White gave up two runs and the lead, and that's where it would stay at 6-5 in favor of the home team.
Nicolette Simpson received a no decision after going 4.2 innings while giving up four runs, only one of which was earned, on nine hits with one walk and one strikeout. In relief,
Lauren Dale (10-6) took the loss in an inning and two thirds with two earned surrendered on two hits and one free pass.
In the second game, the bats came to life for Truman. The visitors pushed across one in the first, five in the fourth, three in the sixth, and another in the seventh. The Bulldogs got RBI singles from
Ashley Murphy,
Riley Cook, Rivera, McMahan, and
Sydney Scherzinger as well as RBI doubles by Van Nostrand, Schmidt, Reisinger, and Rivera. The Purple and White's 10th run came from a sacrifice fly by Van Nostrand.
In the circle,
Alyssa Hajduk (2-3) went the distance to earn the second win of her freshman campaign. The rookie was feeling it as she struck out 13 batters and walked only two in seven innings of work for her second-career complete game.
Next up, Truman is at Missouri S&T for a doubleheader on Sunday with game one set to begin at 12 p.m.
