RECAP: Splitsville For Bulldogs In Series Opener With Missouri-St. Louis

Game 1 Box Score (HTML)
Game 2 Box Score (HTML)

ST. LOUIS – The Truman Baseball team and Missouri-St. Louis began their four-game series a day late due to weather and on Sunday the two teams split their doubleheader. The Bulldogs won 10-7 in game one but fell 16-2 in the nightcap.

The two teams will conclude their series on Monday with another twinbill starting at noon.

Game 1 Recap:
The Bulldogs got off to a hot start with a seven-run second inning but had to hold on at the end to earn a 10-7 victory in the opener.

Nick Agliolo went 3-for-5 and Brendan Trimble got back into the lineup with a pair of hits and drove in two more runs.

The Bulldogs scored all seven runs in the second inning with two outs. Agliolo led off with a single but the next two were quickly retired. Evan Kayser was hit by a pitch to roll over the lineup to the top of the order. Mason King singled in Agliolo for the first run and Trimble followed with a hit. Charlie Kreh doubled in two more. The inning was prolonged by a fielding error off the bat of Jason Priest and three straight singles gave Truman a comfortable cushion.

Or so they thought. The Tritons got on the score board with a run in the fourth then plated two more in both the fifth and sixth to cut the lead down to 7-5.

A pair of sac flies in the seventh, one by Dave Gambino and another by Wyatt Fones restored order and made it 9-5 Truman.

An error in the eighth led to UMSL tightening the game back up with two more unearned runs to make it 9-7.

Kent Frantz got the final out of the inning out of the pen to leave runners at the corners.

The Tritons helped the Bulldogs get one run back in the ninth as Gambino reached on an error and scored on a two-out single by Trimble.

Frantz walked a batter in the bottom of the ninth but ended the game by getting the double play groundout to pick up his first save. Bryan Clark got the win to improve to 4-3 after going five innings.

Game 2 Recap:
The Bulldogs struck again in the early innings as Charlie Kreh scored on a single by Nick Agliolo but the Bulldogs left the bases loaded in their half of the first.

Getting out of that jam ignited the Tritons offensively. UMSL tallied three runs in the first and four in the second aided by some fielding miscues by the Bulldogs. Of the first seven runs, six were unearned as Truman committed three errors. All four runs in the second came after the first two hitters were set down.

Jake Beckwith broke the game open with a Grand Slam in the third inning and the Tritons poured it on with 16 runs on 17 hits.

Jacob Renfrow pitched the complete game for UMSL with allowing two runs on five hits to improve to 5-2 on the season. Alex Hoffmann suffered the loss to fall to 3-4.
