RECAP: Another Fractured Day On The Diamond For Truman Baseball

ST. LOUIS – Charlie Kreh hit three doubles and Chris Iliopoulos went 5-for-8 at the plate as Truman Baseball and Missouri-St. Louis split their GLVC doubleheader and series on Monday. The Bulldogs won game one 11-2 before the Tritons returned the favor in winning game two 8-4.
 
It was the third GLVC series in-a-row that the Bulldogs had taken two of the first three games but couldn't close the door and pick up the series win. Truman will head over to the Kansas City side of the state upcoming for a four-game slate with William Jewell, scheduled to start on Saturday.
 
Kreh went 4-for-8 on the day with three doubles, four runs scored and had three RBIs while Iliopoulos had one more hit (.625) with a double and two RBIs. Brendan Trimble and Jason Priest each also collected four hits on the afternoon. Iliopoulos ended up hitting .500 for the series (7-of-14) and Nick Agliolo hit .467 with matching Kreh with five RBIs.
 
Game 1 Recap:
Rian Markes went the distance for his first collegiate complete game and improved to 3-3 on the season as he was backed by an offense that put up 11 runs on 14 hits in the opener.
 
Markes allowed two runs on six hits and fanned two hitters in getting the win.
 
The Bulldogs tagged UMSL starter Zach Lindsay early with a three-run first inning aided by a pair of walks. Iliopoulos drew a bases loaded walk to start the scoring and Agliolo then hit a sac fly for another run. Dave Gambino sliced a single through the left side for the 3-0 lead.
 
Truman added another run in the second on a single by Kreh to centerfield scoring Trimble.
 
In the fourth, Truman was able to chase Lindsay from the hill after three straight hits and a sac fly. A walk and a double by Priest ran sent another UMSL hurler to the showers early. Iliopoulos and Agliolo greeted the new pitcher with hits to score two more in the five-run inning.
 
The Tritons picked up one run the in the third and scored another in the fourth but Charlie Kreh's diving catch in right prevented another run from crossing the plate and ending the fourth on a double-play.
 
Truman added solo runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
 
Game 2 Recap:
Three-spots in the first and fourth innings allowed UMSL even up the day and series as the doubled up the Bulldogs 8-4.
 
Truman got on the board in the first with two outs. Kreh doubled to left then scored on an RBI single by Priest. However the Tritons got the benefit of a costly error in their half of the opening stanza. A two-out error allowed the first run to score then a two-run single by Cole McDonald made it 3-1.
 
It stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth when the first two Tritons reached to run Brad Molski from the game. Tom DeCero greeted Kent Frantz with a double and UMSL led 6-1 after four.
 
The Bulldogs clawed back to within two with their own three-run inning in the seventh. Trimble singled, Kreh doubled and Priest tripled in consecutive at bats to run UMSL starter Kevin Smith. Agliolo knocked a run-scoring double to close the lead to 6-4.
 
UMSL grabbed the momentum right back with Jake Morsch tripling to start their half of the seventh inning and scoring on a single from Cooper Vinz. They plated one more in the eighth with two outs.
 
Trimble started the ninth with a single but was erased on a double play. The Bulldogs put two more runners on before Agliolo struck out to end the game.
 
Smith got the win for UMSL to improve to 5-2 as he fanned seven Truman hitters and allowed four runs on seven hits.
 
Molski took the loss to drop to 0-4.
