RECAP: Truman Sweeps Quincy in 2017 Home Debut

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - It took 10 matches and 38 sets, but the Truman State University volleyball team finally made its 2017 home debut on Friday night inside a toasty Pershing Arena. The Bulldogs didn't need any help getting hot, though, as they rolled past Quincy in straight sets with scores of 25-16, 25-19 and 25-18.

With the win, Truman improved to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in the GLVC while Quincy fell to 1-10 on the season, including 0-3 in conference action. Making her first career start inside the friendly confines, freshman, Sam Yancy, tied Jocelynn Livingston for the team lead in kills with 10. The attack ran through Savvy Hughes' squad-leading 34 assists and Yancy sent home two of the team's four service aces. Defensively, Lauren Wacker (20) and Meghan Gasper (10) each had 10+ digs and above the net, Livingston was the ringleader with three blocks.

Through the first 12 points of the first set, there were six ties and one lead change before Truman began to gather some momentum. That 12th point was part of a 5-0 run for the home team that put it ahead 10-6 and forced the visitors to call a timeout. Out of the breather, Quincy was able to slim the margin to two on two occasions including 12-10 and 13-11, but a 7-1 spurt for the hosts put things out of reach. The lead ballooned to as many as nine for the Purple and White as it was in the final score, 25-16.

Statistically, the second set was the closest one of the night as it saw a combined nine deadlocks and six lead changes. For the most part, the away team controlled the momentum early on by gaining a lead as big as three, 8-5, but Truman rattled off five of the next six points to go ahead by one, 10-9. After three more ties, the Bulldogs took off with a 9-2 run that gave them a seven-point advantage, 21-14. The Hawks did all they could to make it interesting coming within four, 22-18, but the Purple and White sealed the set and a 2-0 lead with three of the final four points.

Nine points into the third set, Quincy led Truman by one, 5-4, before the Bulldogs tallied four points in a row to go up by three, 8-5. From that point until the end of the match, the Hawks never had another lead and trailed the Bulldogs by as many as 10, 19-9 and 20-10. The home team took the set by seven, 25-18, and the match in straight sets.

Next up, Truman will host McKendree on Saturday (3 p.m.) in a rematch of the 2016 GLVC Tournament finals.
