RECAP: Lighting Strikes Twice For Maryville Against Truman Women

Box Score (HTML)

ST. LOUIS – Last season it was a shot at the horn that gave the Maryville Saints a victory over the Truman Bulldogs, on Thursday night, it was the Saints' Kayla Steward that broke the Bulldogs heart with a shot with 4.2 seconds left that was the difference in an 82-80 Maryville win over the Bulldog women.

The Saints led by as many as 14 points at 57-43 with 4:11 left in the third quarter and by as many as nine at 79-70 with 2:34 left to play before Truman stormed back.

Rachel Edmundson went on a personal 7-0 run with a three-pointer, fastbreak layup off a defensive rebound and a pair of free throws to pull the Bulldogs to within two at 79-77 with 56 seconds left.

Sloane Totta grabbed a rebound and Truman called timeout with 31 ticks showing. Totta then winged a pass across the court to Brooke Bailey who rain bowed in a baseline triple to put Truman up 80-79 with 12 seconds to go.

Following a Saints timeout, Steward roamed to the free throw line and knocked down the jumper with 4.2 left to bounce the Saints back on top.

Truman had a chance for the winner but Totta's backdoor pass to Katie Jaseckas went off her fingertips and out of bounds. Ellen Foster hit the first of two free throws with the second miss not allowing Truman enough time to get off another shot.

Jaseckas was 7-of-9 from the field to lead Truman with 18 points and nabbed four rebounds. Sam Andrews was 5-of-6 from the field, including 4-of-5 from range to tally 14 points. Edmundson also finished with 14 and Rachel Steinhoff added 11.

Truman shot 53.7% but Maryville was better at 55.6% including an efficient 8-of-12 from beyond the arc. Ali Ringering led five Saints players in double figures with 15 points.

The Bulldogs will be off until next Thursday when they face nationally-ranked Drury on the road in Springfield.
