INDIANAPOLIS - After a split on day one of the 2018 Midwest Region Crossover, the Truman State University volleyball team improved to 8-1 in neutral matches on Saturday with a sweep of Tiffin. The Bulldogs took care of business against the Dragons thanks to set scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-18.
Truman improved to 18-5 overall while Tiffin has dropped two in a row and now sits at 17-7. Saturday afternoon, the Bulldogs were led by
Sam Yancy (pictured/10 kills, 13 digs and two blocks),
Savvy Hughes (34 assists and two service aces),
Elle Renault (two aces), and
Holly Hildebrand (two blocks).
All four of the first set's ties came in the first 10 points scored and once it was 5-5, Truman began to take over. The Bulldogs proceeded to score seven of the next eight points to go up by six, 12-6. After that, the Dragons got as close as three, 19-16, but no closer, and the Purple and White led by as many as seven (14-7 and 25-18).
Tiffin flipped the script in the second set and scored nine of the first 11 points. Truman then answered with a 10-2 run of its own to take its first lead of the period, 12-11. Following the fourth and final tie at 12-12, the Bulldogs took the lead and didn't look back. The Dragons came within one at 15-14 and the Purple and White pushed their advantage to as many as eight, 25-17.
After ties of 1-1 and 2-2 in the beginning of the third set, Truman used a 9-3 spurt to go up 11-5 and force a Tiffin timeout. After that, it was all about the Bulldogs as their lead was only as small as four, 22-18, but grew to be as large as 10 when it was 19-9 and 20-10.
At the conclusion of the tournament, outside hitter,
Ellie Kaat, was one of eight players representing the GLVC to be named to the Crossover All-Tournament Team.
Next up, Truman will begin a three-match homestand with Illinois Springfield on Friday, Oct. 19 beginning at 7 p.m.
