KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State University volleyball team's losing streak reached a season-worst three matches on Tuesday night as No. 23 Rockhurst swept the Bulldogs with set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-21 inside Pershing Arena.
With the loss, Truman dropped to 18-8 overall and 8-6 in the GLVC while Rockhurst snapped a two-match losing streak to improve to 23-5 overall and 11-3 in league play. In the two teams' second meeting of the fall, the Bulldogs were led by
Ellie Kaat (17 kills),
Savvy Hughes (35 assists),
Lauren Wacker (three aces and 22 digs), and
Holly Hildebrand (four blocks).
Combined, the first two sets saw just two ties and to lead changes. After Truman scored the first point of the match, Rockhurst answered with four-straight points, but the Bulldogs hung around for a while. The home team cut the deficit to two on three occasions and three twice, but the visitors stretched their lead over time to as many as six (12-6, 17-11, 18-12, 19-13, and 21-15).
In the second period, Truman scored the first point again, but Rockhurst proceeded to rattle off 10 of the next 12 points to lead by seven, 10-3. The Bulldogs didn't go away quietly, though, and pulled within two at four different points including 20-18, 21-19, 23-21, and 24-22, but the Hawks held on for the win and 2-0 match advantage.
The third set saw four deadlocks and two lead changes with two of the ties coming in the first 16 total points (1-1 and 8-8). Once it was 8-8, Truman was in the midst of a 5-1 run to go up by two, 11-9. The Bulldogs would hold that lead until the third and fourth ties (16-16 and 17-17), but that 34th point was part of a 9-4 run by the Hawks to seal the match.
Next up, Truman is at Missouri S&T on Friday with the first serve set for 7 p.m.
