ST. CHARLES, Mo. - For the 30th time in program history, seventh time under head coach,
Ben Briney, and first time since 2014, the Truman State University volleyball team has won 20 matches in a season. Tuesday night at future GLVC foe, Lindenwood, the Bulldogs swept the Lions with set scores of 25-16, 25-21 and 25-17.
In its final non-conference match of the regular season, Truman (20-9) finished 2018 with an 11-2 record against opponents outside of the league. On the other side, Lindenwood (14-13), has dropped five of its last seven matches and now trails the all-time series with Truman, 4-0.
In the two teams' most-recent meeting, the Bulldogs were paced by
Ellie Kaat (12 kills),
Savvy Hughes (31 assists),
Lauren Wacker (five service aces),
Holly Hildebrand (three block assists), and
Sam Yancy (pictured/16 digs).
In the first set, it was a back-and-forth affair early on as neither team was able to lead by more than two until Truman did so at 7-4. Lindenwood continued to battle and the Bulldogs would have that same three-point lead four more times until a 5-0 run put them up, 16-10. After that, the Lions would never get closer than three and the visitors sealed it with a 7-1 run at the end.
On to the second period, Truman scored four of the first five points before Lindenwood answered with five-straight points to lead by two, 6-4. The Bulldogs responded with a 5-0 run of their own to go back ahead by three, 9-6, before the Lions pulled within one at four different times. However, the away team hung together and ended the frame with a 4-1 spurt to take a 2-0 match lead.
In the third, Lindenwood went ahead 5-1 and held that lead for awhile before Truman used a 7-0 run to get its first lead of the set, 16-12. From that point until the end of the period, the Lions would never get closer than three and the Bulldogs led by as many as eight (23-15, 24-16 and 25-17).
Next up, Truman will host Indianapolis on Friday inside Pershing Arena with first serve set for 7 p.m.
