RECAP: Truman Picks Up Much-Needed Win Over Indianapolis

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - With GLVC Tournament seeding still up for grabs on the final weekend of the regular season, the Truman State University volleyball team stepped up in a big way on Friday night inside Pershing Arena. After dropping the first set against Indianapolis, the Bulldogs came back to win the next three as the showdown finished with set scores of 24-26, 25-20, 25-18, and 25-17.

With the win, Truman (21-9, 10-7 GLVC) snapped a three-match home losing skid while Indianapolis (18-11, 11-6 GLVC) dropped two games below the .500 mark in true road matches at 4-6. In the two teams' most-recent meeting, the Bulldogs were led by Holly Hildebrand (12 kills), Savvy Hughes (46 assists), Elle Renault (three aces), Natalie Brimeyer (pictured/five blocks), and Lauren Wacker (26 digs).

The first set was the tightest one of the night as it saw eight of the match's 12 ties and four of its six lead changes. Indianapolis scored the first three points and six of the first nine before Truman answered with a 5-2 run of its own to knot things up for the first time at 8-8. Next came three more ties, the last of which was 11-11 and came in the midst of a 6-1 spurt for the Bulldogs to put them ahead by four, 16-12. However, from that point on, the Greyounds outscored their hosts by six, 14-8, to go up 1-0 in the match.

In the second period, Truman scored first this time and went on to score seven of the first 10 points. Indianapolis didn't go away quietly, though, and eventually battled back to within one, 17-16, but the Bulldogs hung together with a 7-1 run to help put it away and tie the match at 1-1.

On to the third set, neither team led by two until Truman was ahead by three, 8-5, and even 12-6 thanks to 10-2 run. After that, Indianapolis could never get closer than three points and the Bulldogs were able to take a 2-1 lead into the fourth set.

In the fourth, the Bulldogs scored four of the first five points and never relinquished their lead the rest of the way. The Purple and White used runs of 7-1 and 8-3 to put the match away and led by as many as eight when it was 25-17.

Next up, Truman will host No. 22 Lewis for Senior Day on Saturday and first serve is set for 4 p.m. Those four Bulldog seniors are Natalie Brimeyer, Savvy Hughes, Holly Hildebrand, and Claire Wandrey.
