KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - No. 22-ranked Lewis spoiled Senior Day for the Truman State University volleyball team on Saturday afternoon inside Pershing Arena. The Flyers out-hit the Bulldogs .252 to .171 and won with set scores of 25-19, 25-21 and 25-22.
Truman fell to 21-10 overall and 10-8 in the GLVC while Lewis improved to 24-6 on the season including 15-3 in league play. Saturday, the Bulldogs' statistical leaders included
Holly Hildebrand (10 kills and two blocks),
Savvy Hughes (37 assists and 19 digs) as well as three different players with a service ace.
In the first set, there were only two ties and they came at 1-1 and 3-3. Lewis then scored three-straight points and kept the lead for good. The closest Truman could get from that point on was two and it happened eight times, but the Flyers were unrelenting to win the set.
In the second set, the visitors scored four of the first five points to force a timeout by the home team. Out of the breather, Truman battled and battled before finally getting things tied up at 13-13. Following five more ties, the last of which was 18-18, Lewis ended the set on a 7-3 run to go up 2-0 in the match.
The third set was the closest of the match as it contained six ties and four lead changes. The Flyers scored the first point and seven of the first 10 before a Bulldog timeout. The away team then pushed its lead to as big as six, 13-7, and the hosts used another timeout. Following that stoppage, Truman scored 14 of the next 21 points to take its first lead of the set at 21-20. However, Lewis ended the set and sealed the victory with a 5-1 spurt.
Next up, Truman will compete in the GLVC Tournament on Nov. 8-10 at the EastSide Centre in East Peoria, Ill.
