RECAP: Bulldogs Give Up Early Leads In Sweep At Southern

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

JOPLIN, Mo. – The Bulldog Baseball team came up empty in a pair of losses on Sunday as Missouri Southern swept the four-game series. The Lions won the opener 8-6 and the nightcap 6-3. Truman returns to the road next week in Nashville against Trevecca Nazarene starting with a doubleheader on Friday.
The Bulldogs scored in the first inning in three of the four games this weekend but each time Southern answered back with runs of their own.

In game one, Truman took advantage of a pair of walks to start the game with Brendan Trimble and Charlie Kreh driving in runs for the 2-0 lead. The Lions responded with an unearned run in their half of the inning and tied the game in the second.

The Bulldogs went back on top in the third with a double by Evan Kayser and an RBI single by Jake Goodwin but a big five-run sixth threw water on Truman's day. The inning featuered a head off home run and a three-run shot.

Truman attempted a rally again in their final at bat. Singles by Noah Scrader and Josh Abegg were brought home on a double down the line by Kreh with one out. However the next two hitters were retired by Cam Bednar for the save.

In the second game, Truman again scored twice in the first when starter Corey Cowan had command issues. Schrader singled and later scored on a bases load walk issued to Kreh. Ethan Kleinheider was also the beneficiary of a bases on balls RBI and chased Cowan from the mound.

The Lions responded again with a run in the first and another in the second to knot things up at two.

Southern would add two in the third before the Bulldogs got one back in the fifth to make it 4-3.

A leadoff walk in Southern's fifth would come back and haunt Truman. Evan Cheng knocked a single to right to add the insurance run and a hit batsman in the sixth would score the final Lion run.

Meanwhile, Zac Shoemaker mowed down the 'Dogs in his seven plus innings of work. Shoemaker allowed just two hits and fanned 10 before giving away to Brennon Covington in the ninth who struck out the side. Southern retired the final 13 straight Truman hitters after the run in the fifth.

Josh Abegg had the most success of any Bulldog at the plate during the series. Abegg hit .429 with seven runs scored and collected three doubles and two triples in the four games. However, the Lion pitching staff fanned 48 Truman hitters in the series and was successful on 12-of-14 stolen base attempts.
