RECAP: Stellar Pitching In Game One; However 'Dogs Split Doubleheader

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

NASHVILLE - It was night and day for the Bulldogs in their doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene University. In the program's first ever meeting with the Trojans, the Bulldogs earned a split winning the first game 4-3 and losing the next 13-3.

The Bulldogs pitching staff turned in a stellar performance in game one during the day and allowed the most runs in a game this season in game two during the evening. In game one, sophomore left-handed pitcher Bryan Clark had a career high seven innings and 10 strikeouts making him the first Bulldog pitcher to go at least seven innings since he did so almost a year ago against Augustana University. Freshman Matthew Wade and senior Peter Young recorded three more to bring the Bulldog total to 13. It is the most strikeouts by a Truman staff in a game since they had 13 against Merrimack College March 7, 2004.

Clark entered the bottom of the first inning with a three-run lead after the Bulldogs jumped ahead in the initial frame for the third straight game. The Bulldogs came into this series with a 1-3 record when they score in the first inning.

Noah Schrader and Mason King singled to start the game. After a pair of strikeouts, Brendan Trimble singled to score Schrader and then Evan Kayser hit his third triple of the season to score two more runs. The last Bulldog to have at least three triples in a season was Dave Gambino in 2015

From there, Clark struck out the side in the first and would allow only one extra base hit in the form of a home run by Sam Mang. This is also the only run Clark allowed before he passed the ball to the bullpen. Wade pitched a hitless eighth inning bringing his scoreless-inning streak to seven. Young entered the ninth yet to allow a run, but fell behind 3-0 to Mang who would then hit a leadoff double. Three of the next five Trojans reached base scoring two runs before Ethan Kleinheider caught a line drive at third base to end the game.

In game two, the Bulldog offense was not able to get anything going in the first. The Trojans were able to push across a run in their half of the inning moving leadoff man Ethan Harrison with a groundout after he stole second base. Harrison would then score on an error by Brendan Trimble.

The Trojans continued to play small ball in the next inning after Kent Frantz hit two batters. Justin Chauvin bunt for a base hit and Harrison drove in two runs with his second hit off the day. Harrison finished 3-for-4 after going 0-for-5 in game one.

The Bulldogs answered with some offense in the top of the third after Schrader singled down the left field line to score Jake Schneider, who was catching after Jon Lyons caught the first game. Schrader finished the game 1-for-4 with an RBI after going 2-for-3 with an RBI in game one. He has a six-game hitting streak.

Chauvin drove in two more runs for the Trojans in the bottom of the inning knocking Frantz out of the game to be replaced by Christian Watson. Frantz allowed six earned runs in 2.2 innings.

The Trojan offense would rattle off eight more hits and seven more runs against Watson and Josh Woodmansee bringing the game and doubleheader to an end.

Josh Abegg finished the day 2-for-6 extending his hitting streak to seven games while Charlie Kreh went 0-for-6 including 0-for-4 in the game one ending his eight-game on base streak.
