RECAP: Saginaw Valley Claims First Two Against Truman Baseball

Game 1 Box Score | Game 2 Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Saginaw Valley (Mich.) State used a five-run fourth in game one and clawed their way back for a 4-3 extra inning win in game two to take both ends of Saturday's doubleheader over the Truman Baseball team.

In game one, the Cardinals jumped on top 2-0 in the first. Josh Abegg hit a sac fly to left to cut the lead in half in the Bulldog first.

A groundout RBI in the top of the second gave Saginaw Valley a 3-1 lead until Jon Lyons lifted his first home run of the season over the left field fence to make it 3-2.

Adam Fitzgibbon led off the third with a single and appeared to be erased on a double play on the next pitch but catcher interference was called and the Cardinals had two on with no outs. An RBI single by Quincy Jones plated the first run of the frame and a sac fly from Todd Paperd brought in another for a 5-2 lead.

The dam broke for Truman in the fourth when 10 Cardinal hitters went to the plate and aided by an error, walk and hit batsman, Saginaw scored five times to lead 10-2.

Truman got a pair of runs back in the sixth when Mason King drew a bases loaded walk and Brendan Trimble hit sac fly scoring Ethan Kleinheider.

Bryan Clark took the loss going only three innings and surrendering eight runs, four earned. Alex Millhisler pitched six innings for the Cardinals and allowed nine hits for the win.

Kent Frantz had one of his best outings on the mound for Truman but got a no decision in a 4-3 extra inning loss. Frantz went seven innings and struck out six giving up single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.

Truman grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second when Abegg scored on a wild pitch. The first four Bulldogs reached to start the inning but a double-play and unassisted play at first ruined a potential big inning for the Bulldogs.

The Cardinals came right back in the third when a one-out walk and stolen base would come in to score on a two-out single up the middle by Derrek Clyde.

Truman regained the lead in their third when Mason King walked and later scored on another wild pitch.

Jack Goodwin hit his first collegiate home run in the fourth as he lifted a 3-1 pitch into the wind in left for a 3-1 Truman lead.

Cole Brooks did the same thing for the Cardinals in the fifth with a solo home run to cut the lead to 3-2.

In the sixth, Adam Fitzgibbon singled with one out and went from first to third on a hit by Jordan Swiss. A groundout by Quincy Jones brought home the tying run as Swiss broke for second on the pitch and Trimble had to reverse his tracks from covering second to fielding and had only one play at first allowing the run to score.

Matt Wade stranded a pair of Cardinal runners in scoring position in the eighth while eventual winner Caleb Somerville did the same in Truman's eighth.

In the ninth, Brooks doubled to start things off and was standing at third when Matt Tometz came in to face Clyde with two outs. Tometz got Clyde to fly out to left field.

After the first two were retired in the top of the tenth, Swiss singled through the hole in left. He moved into scoring position with a stolen base and moved over to third when the throw went into center field. He would score on an opposite-field flare by Jones that dropped in front of Noah Schrader in left.

Swiss moved from third to the mound and pitched a 1-2-3 inning to record his fourth save of the season and to wrap up his big day. He went 6-for-9 with three runs scored and two RBIs in the twinbill.

Jack Goodwin and Mason King each had three hits on the day for Truman.

The two teams will return to action on Sunday at noon for a doubleheader.
