KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – Tim Lira drove in six of Missouri S&T's 10 runs as the Miners took control of the fourth and final GLVC Tournament spot available in the West Division with a doubleheader sweep over the Truman Bulldogs on Saturday.
The series and the season for Truman will conclude on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon. There will be special presentations prior to the first pitch and seniors will be honored in between games.
Doubleheader Notes:
- Both Truman starting pitchers went seven innings with Rian Markes getting the start in the opener and not allowing an earned run in seven while Matt Wade pitched his second straight complete game in the nightcap.
- Mason King belted his first home run of the season to leadoff the bottom of the first in game one.
- King hit .429 for the two games as Charlie Kreh went 2-for-6 and added an RBI.
- S&T's Tim Lira had six RBIs, including a grand slam in a six-run eighth inning in game one.
- Justus Nelson went 4-for-5 in the opener and 5-for-8 overall to lead the S&T offense.
- The Miners leapfrogged William Jewell in the GLVC West standings with their wins and can secure their spot in the conference tournament with one victory on Saturday.
Game 1 Box Score
- Rian Markes wiggled out of a first inning jam with two on and two out by getting a fly out to center to end the inning.
- Mason King belted his first home run of the season to lead off Truman's first. The ball sailed over the right center field fence.
- S&T looked to tie in the third but left fielder Adam Stolley threw out Cameron Burk trying to advance to third with one out.
- In the fourth, an error and timely hit and run put runners at second and third with one out but two straight line drives were snared by Brendan Trimble at second base to preserve the 1-0 lead.
- The Miners stayed out of a double play in the fifth with the runners in motion and had second and third with two outs. Tim Lira walked to load the bases before Markes got Kaleb Reid to ground into a close force play at second to end the inning.
- Truman had their fourth and fifth innings thwarted by line drive double plays.
- Zach Wiegand singled to left in the sixth with catcher Justus Nelson on second. The ball was muffed by Stolley allowing Nelson to score the tying run.
- The Bulldogs regained the lead in their half of the sixth. Three straight singles loaded the bases. Trimble hit a sac fly to center and Evan Kayser hit another sac fly to make it 3-1.
- The inning ended when shortstop Jack DeGarmo made a diving catch in foul territory with runners in scoring position.
- The eighth inning was the back breaker for the Bulldogs. Reliever Blake Bagenstos had a runner on third with one out before an infield single compounded by a throwing error made it 3-2.
- A bunt single by Cameron Burk put runners at the corner and brought Matt Tometz into the game.
- Tometz threw a pitch in the dirt allowing the tying run to score and eventually loaded the bases before giving the slam to Lira for a 7-3 S&T lead.
- Charlie Kreh got an RBI single in Truman's half of the eight and the Bulldogs loaded the bases with one out. A swinging bunt by Zach Spencer brought in another run but Luke Marcheschi got Bryan Edell to ground out at third to preserve the lead.
- Anthony Garza pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save of the season.
Game 2 Box Score
- Cameron Burk singled through the left side and was sacrificed up to second and got to third with two outs.
- Tim Lira dunked a single into center field for a 1-0 lead.
- With runners at the corners in the fourth and two outs, Justus Nelson broke for second on a delayed steal and got into a rundown allowing Kaleb Reid to score from third.
- The Bulldogs were without a hit until Charlie Kreh slapped a single deep in the second base hole.
- Zach Spencer drilled a ball through the right side to lead off the fifth and after being sacrificed into scoring position was thrown out at the plate for the third out in the inning on a single from Josh Abegg to left.
- Lira hit a sac fly for an insurance run in the top of the sixth.
- Starter Dalton Erger allowed only three hits in pitching the complete-game shutout for S&T. Erger threw 82 pitches and struck out eight Truman hitters.
- Matt Wade went the distance for the second straight week for Truman allowing five hits and three earned runs.
