RECAP: Missouri S&T Spoils Senior Day With Sweep Of Bulldogs

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Missouri S&T Miners completed their four-game sweep over the Truman Bulldogs and had to do so in dramatic fashion. The Miners took game one 4-0 and held on for a 3-2 win in the finale as they were able to throw out the tying run at the plate.
 
Game 1 Box Score:
  • The Bulldogs threatened in the first when Brendan Trimble hit his 34th career double with one out. Trimble was at third when Evan Kayser tried to surprise the defense with a two out bunt but the Miners got Kayser on the close play at first.
  • Jack DeGarmo painted the line in left for a lead off double in the third and after a sac bunt was standing at third base with one out.
  • Cameron Burk tapped a roller to third and Dan Ampleman came home with the throw to gun DeGarmo at the dish to preserve the scoreless tie.
  • In the fifth, Justus Nelson belted his second home run of the season over the 350 sign in left center to put the Miners up 1-0.
  • Ampleman walked in Truman's fifth and was at second when Mason King drilled a ball off the foot of first baseman Tim Lira. The ball ricocheted away but Lira snared it to throw Ampleman out at the plate trying to score.
  • King had an outfield assist for the first out in the sixth when he gunned down Lucas Swindle going to third.
  • The Miners had runners at the corner with one out when Lira sliced a ball through the right side for a 2-0 lead and his seventh RBI of the series.
  • S&T added a pair of runs in the seventh with both scoring on a safety squeeze bunt. Swindle placed the ball between first and the mound and as pitcher Tanner Forck made the play to first, Charlie Kreh was back peddling to the bag to make the catch, after the catch was made, Zach Wiegand did not stop rounding third and scored on the play as Kreh was on his heels making the throw.
  • Trimble and Charlie Kreh had the two hits for Truman.
  • Matthew Lamb got the win going five innings and allowing both hits. Stuart Martin and Bryan Nolan combine on the shutout with Nolan earning the save after the Bulldogs put a pair of runners on in the seventh.
  • Bryan Clark pitched six-plus innings with four strikeouts.
 
Game 2 Box Score
  • The Bulldogs had a runner at third with two outs by Brendan Trimble bounced into a groundout at short.
  • Nathan Volkmann picked up an RBI single with two outs in the top of the second when he drove in Kaleb Reid, who reached via a hit batsman.
  • Jon Lyons gunned down Lucas Swindle trying to steal third in the third. Lyons dove right for a pitch in the dirt and nailed Swindle trying to take the base seeing a potential wild pitch.
  • Ethan Kleinheider singled with two outs and was on second following a hit by pitch to Lyons. Josh Abegg singled to left field by Kleinheider was out at the plate trying to score.
  • In the fourth, a walk and hit batsman led to trouble for Kent Frantz. Volkmann brought in one with an RBI groundout to short and Cameron Burk added a second run with an RBI single to left to put S&T up 3-0.
  • Frantz was the first senior to be recognized when he was replaced in the seventh. He struck out four in his Bulldog finale to finish with 169 career strikeouts, second on the all-time list at Truman. Frantz' bid for career win number 20 came up short but will still leave Truman with the most innings pitched (273) and wins with 19.
  • Battery-mate Lyons was next to depart to cheers as did right fielder Josh Abegg.
  • Brendan Trimble roped his final Truman at bat into center field but it was snared by Kaleb Reid. Trimble departed after taking his position in the ninth. He finished his Bulldog career with 186 games played, 34 doubles, 193 hits and 92 RBIs.
  • Senior Matt Tometz got the Bulldogs out of the eight with a fielders choice and retired the first two in the ninth.
  • Peter Young took to the mound for one last time with two outs. Young was able to get Matt Knickerbocker to line out to center to end the half inning. Young finishes his Truman career as the all-time leader in saves with 25 and a career ERA of 1.72 in 68 appearances.
  • The Bulldogs wanted to send their seniors home with a win.
  • Evan Kayser reached on an error and Zach Spencer drew a walk to start the ninth.
  • After a pair of strikeouts, Adam Stolley found the hole on the right side to score two and break the shutout.
  • A walk to Noah Schrader forced the Miners to their pen for Matt Miller with Mason King coming up.
  • King hit a rocket that bounced off the glove of first baseman Zach Bracken, Stolley tried to score from second but second baseman Matt Knickerbocker threw a strike home to nail Stolley to end the game.
