KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - The Truman State University volleyball team was happy to be home for the first time on Tuesday night and it showed on the court. The Bulldogs made quick work of visiting William Jewell with straight-set scores of 25-16, 25-10 and 25-20 while out-hitting the Cardinals .333 to .079.
Truman (8-3, 1-2 GLVC) snapped a two-game skid, its longest of the season, while William Jewell (2-9, 0-3 GLVC) has been on the losing end in five straight and six of its last seven. Tuesday, the Bulldogs were led by
Ellie Kaat (14 kills),
Savvy Hughes (39 assists),
Claire Wandrey (two service aces),
Holly Hildebrand (three blocks),
Natalie Brimeyer (three blocks), and
Lauren Wacker (19 digs).
The first set was the tightest of a fairly lopsided match as it saw seven of the 13 ties and two of its five lead changes. After Truman scored the first point, Jewell scored six of the next eight to go ahead by three, 6-3. The home team then turned the tables and used a 6-3 run of its own to tie it up, 9-9. Then came five more ties, the final being 14-14, before the Bulldogs ended the period with 11 of a possible 13 points to up 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, Truman hit an unheard of .478 with 11 kills and no errors on 23 total attacks to a hitting percentage of just -.108 from Jewell. The Cardinals scored two of the first three points before the Bulldogs rattled off 24 of the next 32. That 24-8 run by the hosts included a run of 12-straight points at the end after the away team went up 13-10 and tried to stop the bleeding with a pair of timeouts.
After Truman scored the first point of the third set, Jewell took a 2-1 advantage and aside from three more ties (2-2, 14-14 and 19-19), controlled the first half of the set. That 38th point came in the midst of a 9-1 run that gave the Bulldogs a set victory and match win in straight sets.
Next up, the Bulldogs are home again on Saturday to face Quincy with first serve set for 3 p.m.
