RECAP: Bulldogs Chew Up Hawks to Sweep the Week

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - After having its six-match winning streak snapped and falling to 0-2 in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play last week, the Truman State University volleyball team was quick to right the ship in their first home dates of 2018. Following up a sweep of William Jewell on Tuesday night, the Bulldogs made quick work of Quincy on Saturday afternoon with set scores of 25-15, 25-16 and 25-19.

Truman improved to 9-3 overall and 2-2 in the GLVC while Quincy fell to 5-7 on the season, 0-4 in league play and has dropped seven in a row. Saturday, the Bulldogs were led by a pair of hitters with at least 10 kills including Ellie Kaat (11) and Sam Yancy (10). Yancy hit .304 in the process and Jocelynn Livingston was right behind her with nine kills and a blistering .471 hitting percentage. The Purple and White's other stat leaders included Savvy Hughes (34 assists and three service aces), Lauren Wacker (three aces and 20 digs) and Kaat (two solo blocks).

The first set was the only one of the three that didn't see a single tie or lead change as Truman was in command from the get go. The Bulldogs hit .390 to just .154 by the Hawks and eight of the first nine points helped lead to that clip. From there until the end of the set, Quincy was never closer than five (9-4, 10-5 and 11-6), and Truman shut the door with separate runs of 6-1 and 5-1.

After Quincy scored the first point of the second set, Truman rattled off four in a row before the Hawks answered with another three to tie it, 4-4. Then came four more ties, the final being 8-8, before the Bulldogs scored 11 of a possible 13 points to take a 10-point lead, 19-9. After that, the visitors were never closer than six (20-14 and 22-16), before the home team won the set by nine to go up 2-0 in the match.

The Hawks opened the third period with a 4-1 spurt and held the lead until the Bulldogs were able to battle back and tie it for a second time at 7-7. Following the final four deadlocks, the last of which was 12-12, Truman ended the set/match with a 13-7 run to claim the day's victory over Quincy.

Next up, Truman is at Southern Indiana on Friday with first serve set for 7 p.m.
