KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - After a grim start that saw Lewis take a 2-0 lead before halftime, the Truman State University men's soccer team made the appropriate adjustments during the break, which led to a second-half surge. The Bulldogs put two in the back of the net in a span of just over three and half minutes to salvage the double-overtime tie with the Flyers in their 2018 GLVC opener.
With the deadlock, Truman is now 2-0-2 overall while Lewis sits at 1-1-3. Sunday, the Bulldogs will look to remain unbeaten with Southern Indiana in town (2:30 p.m.) while the Flyers will be at McKendree. As for the Screaming Eagles, they defeated Drury on Friday to improve to 3-1.
Lewis came out of the gates with a vengeance, which led to goals in both the 22nd and 42nd minutes by Malinowski and Ochoa, respectively. Switching gears to the second half and a pair of Bulldogs struck gold for the first time this season.
Mateo Montano did so with a header off of
Austin Morgan's corner kick in the 54th minute and
Ian McCluskey did so 3:31 later with an absolute bullet off of
Zach Vahlkamp's assist (first of career).
Aside from the Flyers' two scores, the Purple and White's back line didn't let much get to sophomore goalkeeper,
Jacob Gunn. Gunn, who played all 110 minutes for the second time in his career, faced just four shots with two saves. Team wise, Truman held a severe advantage over Lewis in shots to the tune of 17-9 including 6-4 in shots on target.
