KIRKSVILLE, Mo. - After striking first in the 23rd minute against Purdue Northwest, the Truman State University men's soccer team fell behind 2-1 early in the second half. The Bulldogs proceeded to score twice in a nine and a half minute span when it mattered most and held on for the 3-2 victory, their first of 2018.
Truman's first goal came from
Trevor Kaufmann as he was assisted by both
Ian McCluskey and
Matt Yankowitz thanks to beautiful passes from the left side. That gives Kaufmann 12 scores for his career while McCluskey and Yankowitz picked up assists No. 1 and 3, respectively.
Purdue Northwest then got on the board in both the 30th and 52nd minutes, but the Bulldogs had a pair of answers. In the 72nd minute,
Jeff Masters found the back of the net for the first time this season and second in his career thanks to a great corner from freshman,
Collin McDonough, and header by
Danny Alter.
Nine and a half minutes later, McDonough was at it again as his first collegiate goal was the go-ahead score to make it 3-2. McDonough was assisted by
Tristyn Hasmer, broke free from 18 yards out and beat the keeper on the ground to the right side. That helper gave Hasmer two for his time in the Purple and White.
In goal,
Jacob Gunn faced 15 shots and saved seven of them. For the team head-to-head, Purdue Northwest led Truman in shots (15-11), shots on goal (9-6) and corner kicks (2-1).
Next up, the Bulldogs will travel to Southwest Baptist in a week with kickoff set for 2 p.m.
