BOLIVAR, Mo. - For the first time since 2014, the Truman State University men's soccer team is undefeated after its first three matches of the season. Sunday at Southwest Baptist, the Bulldogs racked up six goals in a shutout of the Bearcats to improve to 2-0-1 heading into Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play on Friday vs. Lewis. Truman now leads the all-time series with Southwest Baptist, 14-0, while outscoring them 81-3 in those meetings.
Leading the way and capturing the first hat trick for Truman since 2012 (Oct. 21 vs. Southwest Baptist) was junior forward,
Matt Yankowitz. Yankowitz scored in the sixth, seventh and 21st minutes to go with an assist to
Trevor Kaufmann in the 15th. That 2012 hat trick from
Andy Chapman also represents the last time a Bulldog finished with seven points, which Yankowitz was able to accomplish on Sunday. The junior has already matched his season goal total from each of his last two campaigns with four and Kaufmann is up to 13 for his career.
Aside from those four scores, the Purple and White tacked on two more in the second half thanks to
Jake Koenig in the 48th and
Danny Alter on a penalty kick with just 15 seconds left in regulation. For Koenig, that's his first of the season and second of his career while Alter was able to find the back of the net for the first time in the Purple and White.
In goal,
Jacob Gunn saw seven shots and made four saves. In the 84th minute, freshman,
Roy Hart, made his collegiate debut and kept the shutout intact over the final six minutes and 13 seconds.
As mentioned above, Truman will open its GLVC slate on Friday with a 3:30 kickoff against the Flyers at Bulldog Soccer Park. Lewis (1-1-2) won its first of the season on Sunday with a 1-0 victory at Davenport.
