RECAP: Lewis Snaps Truman's Six-Match Winning Streak

ROMEOVILLE, Ill. - The Truman State University volleyball team ran into a buzzsaw in the form of No. 5 Lewis on Friday night in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) opener. The Flyers swept the Bulldogs inside Neil Carey Arena and out-hit them, .240 to .029.

Truman had its six-match winning streak snapped and fell to 7-2 while Lewis, also 7-2, won its 2018 home opener and has been victorious in two-straight outings. Friday, the Bulldogs were led by Ellie Kaat (pictured/11 kills and three block assists), Savvy Hughes (24 assists), Natalie Brimeyer (three block assists), and Lauren Wacker (17 digs).

Nine of the match's 15 ties and four of its seven lead changes came in a back-and-forth first set. Through the first 34 points scored, all nine deadlocks had happened, neither team had led by more than two and Lewis was up by a pair, 18-16. From that point until the end of the set, the Flyers outscored the Bulldogs by three, 7-4, to win the set 25-20 and go up 1-0 in the match.

Aside from two ties and a lead change in the first five points, the home team controlled the second set from start to finish. Once the visitors went ahead 2-1, Lewis rattled off 10-straight points to go up 11-2. After that, Truman was never closer than eight (11-3 and 12-4) and Lewis won the set by 12, 25-13. The Bulldogs scored six of the first nine points in the ensuing period before the Flyers fought back to tie it up for a second time at 8-8. After two more deadlocks (9-9 and 10-10), Lewis used a 6-1 spurt to go up by five. After that, the closest Truman could get was three, 24-21, but the Flyers scored the next point to win the set, 25-21, and the match in straight sets.

Next up, the Bulldogs will be at Indianapolis on Saturday with first serve set for 2 p.m. central time.
