INDIANAPOLIS - After dropping the first set, the Truman State University volleyball team won the next two to take the match lead over homestanding Indianapolis. However, the Greyhounds proceeded to answer with wins in the fourth and fifth to hand the Bulldogs their second-consecutive loss on Saturday afternoon.
With the loss, Truman falls to 7-3 overall and 0-2 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) while Indianapolis, also 7-3 on the season, improved to 2-0 in league play and has won three matches in a row. Saturday, the Bulldogs were led by
Ellie Kaat (15 kills, .314 hitting percentage),
Savvy Hughes (40 assists),
Holly Hildebrand (six block assists), and
Lauren Wacker (20 digs).
The first set was the tightest one of the day as it saw 10 of the match's 25 ties and seven of its 15 lead changes. However, Indianapolis ended the period on a 8-2 run to win it, 25-21, and go up 1-0 on Truman for the match. As for the second set, the Bulldogs controlled it from start to finish and opened with eight-straight points. After that, the Greyhounds were never closer than four points, 12-8, and the visitors led by as many as nine at 11-2, 21-12 and 22-13 before the final of 25-17.
The third set wasn't nearly as lopsided and was the second closest of the showdown with 10 deadlocks and six lead changes. Neither team was able to create any separation until Indianapolis was up two, 11-9, and Truman answered with a 6-0 spurt of its own to go up four, 15-11. The Greyhounds cut the deficit to three on three different occasions, but the Bulldogs again won the set by eight, 25-17. The fourth set saw five ties and two lead changes with Indianapolis ending it on a 10-4 run and the hosts never trailed in the fifth and deciding period.
Next up, Truman will make its 2018 home debut on Tuesday against William Jewell with first serve set for 7 p.m. on ROTC Night inside Pershing Arena.
