RECAP: Truman Defense Stymies Bellarmine 65-49 To Complete 3-1 Road Trip

Box Score (HTML)

LOUISVILLE – A stifling defense and 50% shooting from distance led the Truman Women's Basketball team to a 65-49 win over Bellarmine (Ky.) to finish their four-game road trip at 3-1. Truman returns home for four-straight starting on Thursday night against Missouri-St. Louis.

The Bulldogs (14-2; 5-1 GLVC) held the Knights (8-5; 2-3 GLVC) to under 25% shooting for the game and won the glass 46-40. Maddie Re delivered her fourth double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Rachel Edmundson and Sloane Totta again led the team in scoring with Edmundson scoring 13 and Totta finishing with a dozen.

It was the fifth time in six years that Truman had completed a weekend road sweep in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

The Knights led all 10 minutes of the first quarter but back-to-back triples from Edmundson and Brooke Bailey early in the second gave Truman their first lead. Bellarmine retook the lead but threes from Totta, Tiffany Davenport and again Totta to close the half on a 9-0 run gave Truman a 27-21 lead at the break.

The run would continue into the second half with Truman outscoring Bellarmine 19-12 in the third quarter to take control. The Knights made no more than four field goals in quarters two through four and were 17-of-69 for the game.

Truman blistered the second quarter with five of eight from range and was 9-of-18 outside overall. The Bulldogs were 19-of-47 (40.4%) and converted on 18-of-25 free throw attempts.

It was the third time this season and first time in conference that Truman held an opponent to under 50 points.

The Bulldogs return home on Thursday night to face the pesky Missouri-St. Louis Tritons at 5:30 p.m. UMSL had their game at McKendree postponed on Saturday due to the winter storm and will play that game on Sunday.  Last year, Truman won the only meeting with UMSL 71-66 in Kirksville. The Tritons are 7-6, 1-3 in league play.
