NOTES: Women Host UIS & McKendree This Weekend

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The home cooking continues for the Truman Women's Basketball team when they welcome Illinois Springfield and McKendree this Thursday and Saturday.
 
Truman starts the second half of conference play with a 6-2 league record. The Bulldogs are tied for fourth place in the standings with Maryville and in a three-way tie for third with Maryville and Lewis in the GLVC Points Rating System (PSR). That system is used in seed the top eight teams for the GLVC postseason tournament and rewards teams on wins against stronger league teams.
 
Both Illinois Springfield and McKendree are in the top eight in the GLVC PSR with the Bearcats holding the number seven spot and the Prairie Stars sitting at number eight.
 
The Bulldogs split the first two home games of the stand with a win last Thursday over Missouri-St. Louis 66-61 followed by an 85-78 loss to Maryville.
 
The three players that have started all 18 games lead the team in scoring. Brooke Bailey is averaging 11.3 points per game, is first on the team in assists with 60 and is second in three-pointers made with 31. Rachel Edmundson is leading the team in scoring in GLVC games at 13.8 points per game and is second in overall scoring at 11.1. Edmundson has a team-high 40 three-pointers made this season and is shooting 36% from distance.
 
Sloane Totta is averaging 11 points in conference games and 10.3 overall. The junior has played and started in all 72 games thus far in her Truman career. Totta is second in assists this season with 51 and is the top free throw shooter at 83% (39-of-47).
 
Sophomore Katie Jaseckas returned to the starting lineup on Saturday and led Truman with 16 points. Jaseckas has started 16 games this season and averages 9.9 points per game. She is nearing 500 points in her young Truman career entering the week with 467.
 
The fifth starting spot has been occupied by three different players. Tiffany Davenport started the first seven games, Maddie Re started the next six and Makenzie Bray has started the last five. Re is Truman's top rebounder with 8.3 per night and has four double-doubles this season. She averages 20.1 minutes per game, fifth behind the four players mentioned above. Bray has started five of eight conference games and averages 6.9 points in 21.3 minutes per league tilt.
 
As a team through eight conference games, Truman has the most made three-pointers at 64 (8.0/game) and tied for most attempts with 179 (22.3/g). They are second in the GLVC in three-point shooting percentage at 35.8%. Second in three-point makes is Maryville with 54 and they are tied with Truman in attempts.
  
The Bulldogs have dominated both of this week's opponents in the past with a combine 22-2 record over Illinois Springfield and McKendree. They have won the last three over UIS and four of five since joining the GLVC. Against McKendree, Truman has won the last seven meetings and all five played under the conference banner.
 
Illinois Springfield has dropped three straight and will be on the road for the first time in January. The Prairie Stars were swept at home by scores of 83-77 to Missouri S&T and 97-58 to #2 Drury. UIS has lost all five "true" road games this season and their only two wins in conference came at home against McKendree (84-73 on January 5 and Missouri-St. Louis 68-58 on January 10.)
 
McKendree will play at Quincy on Thursday. The Bearcats broke a four-game conference skid with a 76-63 home win over Missouri S&T on Saturday. They are 9-7 on the season and 3-4 in the GLVC.
 
Polls
Truman's roller coaster ride in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association took a dip this week. The Bulldogs were in the "still receiving votes" category after claiming the number 25 spot last week. GLVC's Drury is at number two and Lewis at number 18. Truman is still only the third conference school getting votes.
 
The Bulldogs have been ranked twice this season, number 24 on January 2nd and number 25 on January 15.
 
Truman has been ranked inside the top 25 in five weekly polls since 2004, peaking at 19 on February 5, 2013. However, the team is 3-6 in games played following a top 25 national ranking.
 
It is the eighth poll this season that Truman has picked up votes in. The most weeks Truman has received votes in a poll during a season was 11 during the 2012-13 season.
 
100 Career Games:
Three Bulldogs have recently played in their 100th career games. Seniors Rachel Steinhoff, Brooke Bailey and Rachel Edmundson joined the 100-game club last week.
 
Steinhoff has played in 103 games, making 64 starts and averages 5.5 points per game. This season, Steinhoff has come off the bench in all 18 games and give the Bulldogs nearly 15 minutes per game. She has 19 assists and five steals while averaging 2.5 points per game.
 
Bailey has played in 102 games and has started the last 26 straight. She is ninth on the career three-point shooting list with 121 makes and 12 away from Amy Brigg's total of 133 for eighth place. She is now the active leader in assists with 193, one ahead of Sloane Totta's 192 and two ahead of Steinhoff's 191.
 
Edmundson has played in 101 games and is the active leading scorer with 832 points. She is one three-pointer behind Bailey on the career triples list and has scored in double-figures 39 times with four 20-point or more games.  Her career high is 27 points against Missouri Southern in 2016.
 
 
A total of 32 players have played at least 100 career games in the Bulldog uniform. Courtney Strait has the most career games at 115 and Carol Jarrard and Allie Norton have the most career starts at 112.
 
Bulldog Bites:
  • Truman is averaging 72.2 points per game with a high of 93 against Barry on December 18 and a low of 59, twice.
  • In eight conference games, the scoring average dips to 69.2 points per game while the scoring defense ticks up to 64.9 points.
  • Truman has taken and made the most three-pointers overall of any GLVC team. The Bulldogs have made 132, tied with Drury and taken 411. The most three-pointers made in a season was 253 set in 31 games during the 2013-14 season and the most attempts is 607 in 29 games during the 2007-08 campaign.
  • Ten players have played in all 18 games and all have averaged near or over 10 minutes per game. Brooke Bailey has the most on-court time average for the team at 25.5 minutes per game. Truman does not have a player within the top 30 in the GLVC in minutes played per game.
  • The Bulldogs are still tied with the 1998-99 team for the best record and start in school history. Both teams sat at 15-3 through 18 games. The 98-99 team lost game 19 to Washburn 79-63 to fall to 15-4 but rebounded in game 20 to down Missouri S&T 73-64 (16-4).
  • Maddie Re has four of the five double-doubles this season and has pulled down 8.3 rebounds per game, good for fifth among all GLVC rebounders. She is joined by fellow freshman Kiara Stewart (UMSL) in the top 10. Stewart is 10th with 6.8 per game.
  • Rachel Edmundson is fourth in three-pointers made overall in the GLVC with 40 (2.2/g). Freshman Paige Robinson of Drury has the most threes with 54 (3.18/g).
  • In conference only stats, Edmunson is 11th in scoring at 13.8 points per game and is the leader in made three-pointers with 25. Robinson has made 22 in one fewer game played.
  • The Bulldogs have won two games this year when entering the fourth quarter trailing. Since the quarter system started in 2014-15, Truman is 5-31 when trailing entering the fourth quarter. When leading entering the fourth, Truman is 59-6.
  • Saturday's game against Maryville was the first time since the quarter system was implemented that the Bulldogs were tied going into the fourth quarter.
 
About Illinois Springfield:
 
The Prairie Stars were 13-13 last season and 7-11 in the GLVC. This year, a five-game losing streak and a current three-game streak have UIS at 5-10 overall and 2-5 in the GLVC. Of their seven conference games, they have played Maryville and Missouri-St. Louis twice (four games) then have results against McKendree, Missouri S&T and Drury. Their two league wins came over McKendree and in the second meeting with Missouri-St. Louis.
 
UIS is the top free throw shooting team overall in the league at 78.3% however they are last in defensive field goal percentage with opponents shooting 43.7% against. They are also one of only two teams in the GLVC that have a negative rebounding margin at -1.5. Rockhurst is last in rebound margin at -5.0. The Prairie Stars average over 10 steals per game and over 19.2 turnovers forced per night.
 
Individually, four players averages over 10 points per game for UIS. Jasmine Sangster leads at 13.5 points followed by Lauren Ladowski at 13.1 points. Val Meissner is third at 10.9 and Tehya Fortune is the fourth at 10.3. Meissner and Fortune have combine for 59 of the team's 108 three-pointers made. The top four scores all have more than one steal per game.
 
 
History with Illinois Springfield:
Truman is 10-1 all-time against Illinois Springfield and 8-0 in games played in Kirksville. Last year, the Bulldogs cruised to a 73-49 win on Senior Day. Katie Jaseckas scored a career-high 26 points on 9-of-13 shooting and pulled down 13 rebounds in the rout. Rachel Edmundson added 10. The Bulldogs blew the game open with a 25-6 third quarter run. Destiny Ramsey was the only UIS in double-figures with 10 points and for the game the Prairie Stars shot 28%.
 
UIS' lone win in the series came in 2015 when they defeated the Bulldogs 72-57.
 
 
About McKendree:
McKendree grabbed the eighth and final seed last year to qualify for the GLVC tournament. They were escorted out of the bracket by top seeded Drury and finished the season with a 12-14 overall record and 8-10 GLVC mark. McKendree broke a four-game conference losing streak on Saturday with a win at home over Missouri S&T.
 
The Bearcats are 11th overall in shooting at 40.3% and 13th in three-point shooting at 27.1%. They are second in rebound margin and fourth in the conference in offensive rebounds with 13.5 per game. In conference only stats, they are second in three-point defense having allowed 27 three-pointers made and 25% shooting from range.
 
Sydney Diekhoff is one of five players that has started all 16 games for McKendree and leads the team in scoring at 15.7 per night. Diekhoff leads the team in three-pointers made with 32 and has also made 51-of-59 free throws. Callie Pohlman has a team-high 60 assistsand Jordan Morton leads in rebounding at 8.3 per game. The Bearcats average 68.1 points per game and give up 63.9.
 
 
History With McKendree:
Truman is 12-1 all-time against McKendree and are riding an eight-game winning streak over the Bearcats.
 
Last year in Lebanon, Katie Jaseckas scored 14 points and added 10 rebounds in Truman's 76-62 victory. Three players, Callie Pohlman, Madison hart and Shauniera Wilson, scored 10 points each for McKendree. Truman shot 48% for the game and knocked down nine three-pointers with two each from Remy Davenport, Mackenzie Jerks and Sam Andrews.
