RECAP: Gut Wrenching Loss For Truman Football

Box Score

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – Two Lindenwood touchdowns in the final 1:16 of the fourth quarter rallied the home team over the Truman Bulldogs 28-24 on Saturday afternoon handing the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.

Erik Henneman caught a two-yard TD pass with 1:16 left to bring the Lions to within three points at 24-21. On the ensuing onsides kick, the Lions won the scrum at the bottom of the pile to get the ball back at midfield. Quarterback Cade Brister, who threw for nearly 200 of his 329 in the game in the fourth quarter, converted on a fourth and four at the Truman 43 then hit Payton Rose for 21 yards down to the Bulldog one with 13 seconds left to play.

After an incompletion to Henneman on the next play, the receiver fought off the Truman defender and snatched the pass out of the air for the go-ahead score with six seconds showing on the scoreboard clock.

The Bulldogs built up a 14-0 lead at the half with Jordan Salima scoring a pair of rushing touchdowns. Salima ran it in from a yard out to cap off a 13-play drive with 7:56 to play in the second quarter then scored on a 14-yard run just before half to finish off an 11-play, 81-yard drive.

Truman went up 17-0 with the first possession of the third quarter when Josh Scheiderer connected on a 42-yard field goal after the drive consumed over seven minutes.

Lindenwood found their offensive rhythm on their first possession of the half. The Lions marched 65 yards on six plays with Henneman snaring a one-yard pass for the home team's first score.

The Lions got the ball back but a critical fumble and recovery by the Bulldogs seemed to squelch the momentum. Truman turned the turnover into points as Jaden Barr split the defense for a 16-yard touchdown run with 13:04 left to play to give Truman a 24-7 advantage.

Brister engineered the Lions down the field in eight plays hitting Rose for a 21-yard touchdown pass to trim the lead back to 24-14.

Lindenwood was knocking on the door again but cornerback Ben Watson picked off Brister in the Truman endzone with 5:42 left to play. Unfortunately, Truman could not pick up a first down and had to punt from their own 27 with 3:22 left.

Three straight completions by Brister moved the ball past midfield and a 16-yard completion to Najee Jackson followed by a 13-yard run by the QB put the ball at Truman's one. Two plays later, Henneman would catch the pass to make it a one-score game setting up the onsides kick and subsequent winning drive by the Lions.

Brister finished 37-50 for 329 yards after having 150 through three quarters. Henneman caught 11 passes for 64 yards and as a team, Lindenwood put up 442 yards of total offense.

Barr threw for a season high 197 on 26-of-36 passing with Dante Ruffin hauling in nine catches for 79 yards. Salima finished with 76 yards on the ground on 17 carries with Barr adding another 52. Truman finished with 350 yards of total offense on the day.

The Bulldogs see their five-game winning streak snapped and will look to regroup for Homecoming next weekend in Kirksville when they host Missouri S&T at 2 p.m.
