QUINCY, Ill.—For the second time this season, the Truman Volleyball team fell 3-1 (25-16, 21-25, 25-23, 25-18) to the Quincy Hawks on Tuesday night. Sam Yancy led the team with 19 kills and 21 points, both career highs, as well as hitting double digits in digs with 14. Despite racking up 59 kills, the Bulldogs could not hold off the Hawks who hit .305 and totaled 63 kills.
Quincy jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead in the first set, but an ace from Lauren Wacker made it 9-8 Hawks. But a 7-2 run got the Hawks back in front by six, and they kept Truman at bay the rest of the set before closing the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-16.
In the second set, with the score deadlocked at four, Truman reeled off four straight points to take an 8-4 lead. Ainsley Heise, Jocelynn Livingston and Morgan Smith each had kills in the streak. With the Bulldogs up six at 18-12, a quick 3-0 spurt got Quincy back in it. Heise and Livingston got back to back kills out of a timeout to reestablish a five point lead, and from there TSU saw out the set 25-21.
Down 2-0 in the third set, Truman reeled off six straight points—with Yancy picking up an ace and Smith picking up back to back kills. Truman led most of the set, but Quincy rallied back to tie it at 14 and then took their first lead at 16-15. The teams seesawed back and forth giving and taking the lead—but in the end with the set tied at 23 Quincy closed out the set to win 25-23.
With the fourth set tied 5-5 early on, Quincy went on a 6-1 run to take a five point lead at 11-6 and Truman could not recover and dropped the set 25-18 as the hosts took the match.
In addition to Yancy, Smith and Ellie Kaat had double digit kills with 14 and 13, respectively. The team resumes the conference schedule Friday night as they go to Lindenwood for a 7 p.m. start.
