ST. CHARLES. Mo.—With only four matches left in the season, the Truman Volleyball team has little room for error as they attempt to make the GLVC tournament. They took care of business tonight against Lindenwood, downing the Lions 3-1 (25-19, 25-20, 20-25, 25-22).
Truman took the first three points of the first set, but Lindenwood would answer back with three straight to tie the set. The teams would go back and forth giving and taking the lead, but down 11-8 Truman went on a 4-1 run, sparked by Jocelynn Livingston kill, to tie the set at 12. Deadlocked at 14, the Bulldogs ripped off four straight points, with kills from Ellie Kaat, Morgan Smith and Livingston to take an 18-14 lead and force a Lindenwood timeout. Truman would not trail the rest of the set and took the first frame 25-19.
At the start of the second set, Truman scored the first six points to force a Lions timeout. After the timeout the Bulldogs would lead by as many as eight, but the hosts would not go down easily. With Truman up 11-3, Lindenwood went on a 9-4 run to close the gap to three at 15-12. But the Lions could not get any closer as Truman took the second set 25-20.
Early in the third set, Truman looked to be cruising up 9-6. But a 7-2 run from Lindenwood got the Lions back in the lead at 13-11, forcing a Truman timeout. From there Truman would come within two at 14-12 and 16-14 following an ace from Rachel DeFries, but could not get any closer as the Lions won the set 25-20.
The fourth set began close at 8-7 Truman, but a 4-0 run quickly boosted the lead to five points courtesy of a run that included kills from Livingston, Smith and Sam Yancy. The lead would swell from five to as many as eight at 20-12. Lindenwood fought back with a 5-1 run to force a Truman timeout. Out of the timeout Truman took three of the next four points to reach matchpoint at 24-18. The hosts took the next four points, but a kill from Yancy finished the match.
Livingston led the team with 15 kills, joined in double figures by Smith with 13 and Kaat with 11. Lauren Wacker racked up 19 digs and DeFries led the team with 22 assists—and had two of the team's six aces.
With tonight's win, the Bulldogs sit one game behind Illinois Springfield and Southern Indiana, who are tied for the eighth seed in the conference. The two are tied at 6-6 in GLVC play while Truman is tied with McKendree and Quincy at 5-7. Tomorrow, the Bulldogs will face a tough challenge as they head to #23 Missouri-St. Louis at 3 p.m.
