RECAP: Heartbreaking Loss For Truman Baseball In Weekend Opener

Box Score (HTML)

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Truman Baseball team allowed three runs in the top of the ninth and fell in the first game of the Dunn Hospitality Classic to Ohio Dominican on Friday 7-6. The classic will take a hiatus on Saturday as weather is forecasted for the area and resume play with a doubleheader on Sunday against Grand Valley State and Southern Indiana.

The Panthers struck first in the first inning when a leadoff double scored on an infield single with one out.

Truman got the run right back when Mason King led off the Bulldog first with a hit and then swiped second. He came in on Steven Bradbury's two-out slice through the left side.

The Bulldogs took the lead in the third when King singled again and Ethan Kleinheider doubled down the left field line. Two straight sac flies from Evan Kayser and Bradbury put Truman in front 3-1.

Truman built upon the lead in the sixth with another pair of runs. Bradbury doubled and a bunt single by Brian Edell put runners at the corners. After a pitching change, a wild pickoff attempt allowed Bradbury to score and Jack Goodwin produced a sac fly to plate Edell for the 5-1 advantage.

Rian Markes pitched the first six innings before the bullpen was called upon.  Tyler Blackington gave up a leadoff double and then had control issues walking the next two hitters with a passed ball and balk included. ODU would score three times to cut the Truman lead down to 5-4.

Edell led off the eighth with a walk and a double by Reid Wilson put the Bulldogs in business. Goodwin singled for an RBI but was later cut down at second trying to steal. Kory Carter fanned but Adam Stolley and King both reached to load the bases however Kleinheider popped out on the infield to end the threat.

Jacob Mertz got the final out in the eighth for Truman but issued a leadoff walk in the ninth. After retiring the next hitter on a fly out, Mertz gave up a single and walk. An error in right field allowed two runs to score to tie the game and a double by the next better put ODU in front 7-6.

The heart of the Bulldog order went down with Ks to end the game in the ninth.

King and Bradbury each had two hits with Bradbury and Goodwin recording two RBIs each. Markes struck out five in six innings of work but got a no decision.
