RECAP: Truman Battles But Comes Up Short Against William Jewell

Game 1 Box Score
Game 2 Box Score

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman Baseball team tried to fight back from deficits but in the end the William Jewell Cardinals took both ends of Wednesday's doubleheader. The Cardinals held on for an 8-7 win in game one and outlasted the Bulldogs 9-7 in 12 innings in the finale.

Game 1 Recap:
Truman fell behind 8-0 after an inning and a third but Tyler Blackington came in relief and righted the ship to give the Bulldogs a chance. Blackington would toss seven and two-third scoreless frames and allowed on two hits while Truman chipped away at the lead and had chances in the late innings.

Evan Kayser led off the fourth with a solo home run to left and that opened the gates for the Bulldogs. They would send nine hitters to the plate, scoring five times to cut the lead to 8-5. Holden Missey rocketed a double off the fence during that inning as well.

Truman scored two more in the fifth to climb back to within one at 8-7.

They put leadoff hitters on base in the sixth, seventh and with one out in the eighth but couldn't execute to get the tying run across. The Bulldogs had second and third with one out in the sixth but a pair of strikeouts preserved the lead for Jewell. A line out double play ended the seventh.

Mason King led off the game drawing his 90th career walk which broke the Truman career record held by Zak Larkin.

Garisson Fields got one out in the fifth to become the pitcher of record and the win while Tyler Murphy gave up one hit over four plus innings to earn the save for the Cardinals.

Game 2 Recap:
Truman struck first and put up three runs in their half of the second. King had a two-run single and Kayser knocked in another. Jewell got a two-run homer from Christian Chalabi in the fourth then tied the game with two outs in the sixth when a pitch was high and went to the backstop allowing Anthony Hanson to race in from third.

The Cardinals grabbed the lead with a three-spot in the eighth and looked to nail down the sweep heading into the bottom of the ninth.

King got a one-out single and moved up on Reid Wilson's base hit. Kayser struck out for the second out but Steven Bradbury kept the Bulldogs alive with an RBI single to score King.

Brian Edell came up clutch as he laced a two-run double down the right field line to tie the game in dramatic fashion.

To extras we went and after two scoreless frames, the Cardinals struck again in the top of the 12th. A bases clearing double that went off the glove of a diving King in left center field put Jewell back on top 9-6. The double was by catcher Nick Gavin.

Truman fought right back. Bradbury led off with a double of his own to right center and a walk followed by a single put the tying run on base. Brenden Kelly moved both runners into scoring position with a bunt for the first out however a strikeout and fly out ended the rally and the game.

Ben Muscatello worked five innings in relief to earn his first win for Jewell while Jack Albright followed Tanner Forck, Jacob Mertz and starter Caleb Buehrle to the hill and was tagged with the loss.

Kayser and Bradbury each had three hits in the marathon for the Bulldogs.

Truman will host McKendree for a three-game conference weekend series starting on Saturday at noon.
