RECAP: Truman Splits Sweeps on First Day of Drury Tournament

SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—In the opener of the Drury Tournament, the Truman volleyball team fell to Colorado Mesa in three tightly contested sets 3-0. Sam Yancy had a double-double with 14 kills and 12 digs.
The first set was a back and forth affair, with eight ties and a couple lead changes. Late in the set TSU trailed 18-15 but a 7-0 run gave them a 22-18 edge. However, CMU would storm back on a 7-1 run to close the set and win 25-23.

In the second set, both teams would trade scoring spurts. With Truman up 8-7, CMU scored five straight to take a four point lead. Truman fought back and eventually took a 17-16 lead, setting up another nail biting ending to the set. Up 22-21 it looked like Truman would pull even in the match but a four point run by CMU ended the set at 25-22 with the Mavericks up 2-0.

Finally the third set saw the Mavericks get off to a fast start. They jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead and held the five point advantage at 11-6. Truman went on a 12-4 run to make it 18-15, but CMU battled back to tie at 19, 20 and 21. After the tie, CMU took the final four points to win the match to win the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.

Match Two
In the second match the Bulldogs took on familiar foe Missouri Western. The first set was a victory for Truman, though they started slowly. The Griffons jumped out to a quick 5-2 lead. Down 7-5, TSU went on a 7-2 run to take a two point lead at 12-9. It started with a kill from Meghan Gasper and included another from Jocelynn Livingston. MWU battled back to tie the set at 14 and a 7-2 run gave the Bulldogs a five point lead. From there Truman would cruise to a 25-21 win in the set.

Truman maintained that momentum in the second set, jumping out to a 5-2 lead. They traded the next six points before MWU made their move. Down 9-5 the Griffons took 8 of 10 points to take a two point lead at 13-11. They would grow their lead to 18-14 before Truman answered with a 3-0 run to pull within a point. With MWU up 22-18, Morgan Smith went on a run of three straight kills to get Truman back into the set. The set was tied at 23 when kills from Ainsley Heise and Livingston finished the set.

In the third set Truman led 4-3 early on, but a 6-1 run by MWU put them back in the lead 9-5. It was 12-6 before a 3-0 run, with kills from Smith and Livingston, got Truman back in it at 12-9. Down 14-9, a 4-0 run by Truman got them within a point. MWU would push back to make it a 17-14 hole for the Bulldogs, but a 5-0 run finally gave Truman the lead at 19-17. But the drama was far from over as MWU took a 23-20 lead following a 5-0 run of their own. Yet true to form, Truman struck back with a 3-0 run which culminated in an ace from Lauren Wacker. MWU had set point following a kill, but three straight errors doomed the Griffons and Truman took the set 26-24 and the match 3-0.

Truman will hit the court tomorrow at 11 a.m. as they take on their second ranked opponent of the year in #7 Northern State and conclude the tournament against #18 Northwest Missouri State at 5 p.m.
