KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—After an abrupt ending to their championship season last spring due to the start of the pandemic, the Truman Tennis team is back in action Sunday as they welcome Quincy to Kirksville for the first competition for any Bulldog team since the start of the pandemic in March.
This will be a busy week for the team as they compete in three duals—first against Quincy at the Bulldog Tennis Courts at 10 a.m., then travel to Marshall, Mo. to face Missouri Valley on Wednesday at 4 p.m. and then Saint Ambrose Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Bulldog Tennis Courts.
The team returns most of the squad from a year ago, including seniors Morgan Eby and Alex Rogers, junior Rachel Shelly, and sophomores Caprice Huitron, Julia Fangman, Kennidy Shirey. Joining the team is Samantha Seggerman, a freshman from Liberty, Mo.
Last fall the team won three of its five matches, downing Central (Iowa) 8-1, Webster 8-1 and William Jewell 5-2. In the spring the Bulldogs finished on a three match winning streak as they downed Coe College 5-4, Missouri Baptist 6-3 and Kasaskia 9-0.
Rogers led the way with nine singles wins last season while playing top singles, while Eby racked up six from second singles. Together the two of them won seven doubles matches in top doubles.
Huitron picked up two singles wins last year in third singles, with her first career win coming against Quincy last October. Shirey won six matches in fourth singles, Fangman picked up seven wins out of fifth singles and Shelly five wins from sixth singles.
