The Truman State women's tennis program earned recognition off the court this week, as Sydney Dial, Finley Laforge, MaryGrace Seymour, and Himari Maruyama were each named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team. To qualify for the honor, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher, demonstrate success on the court, and be at least a sophomore academically and athletically.
All four honorees played significant roles in Truman's 12-10 season, which included a 2-4 conference record and a winning record secured by taking three of the team's final four matches.
Dial, a senior, closed out one of the most accomplished careers in program history. She played No. 1 singles for two years and No. 1 doubles for three, finishing the season 12-11 in singles and 12-8 in doubles. Her primary doubles partnership with Nayana Malangi went 10-8 on the year.
Laforge put together one of her strongest seasons as a Bulldog, going 12-11 in singles and 14-9 in doubles. She competed primarily at No. 3 singles and partnered with MaryGrace Seymour at No. 2 doubles, where the two went 14-8 together on the season. Laforge capped the year with a standout performance against Rockhurst's Marina Magai, a top player in the conference, in the team's final match.
Seymour finished 12-9 in singles, competing primarily at No. 4, and posted a 14-8 doubles record alongside Laforge. She was one of the more consistent contributors in the lineup throughout the season, including a memorable three-set singles win in Truman's GLVC victory over Quincy that clinched the match.
Maruyama went 9-5 in singles on the year and 4-4 in doubles, primarily competing at No. 5 and No. 6 singles. She showed growth throughout the season and was praised by head coach Steve Smith for the way she elevated her play in close matches down the stretch.
The four honorees were part of a Bulldog roster that won nine of their final 13 matches to close the season on a strong note.
