RECAP: Southern Indiana Storms Back To Take Down Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo. – The Truman State women started out on fire Sunday afternoon hitting 75% of their field goal attempts and racing out to a 19-point first quarter lead but Southern Indiana clawed their way back, took their first lead with 1:27 left to play and downed the Bulldogs 83-78 on Sunday afternoon.
 
The Bulldogs were 12-of-16 and 6-of-10 from three in the first 10 minutes and built up 30-11 lead just before the end of the first quarter. Hannah Belanger scored 11 points in the opening stanza for Truman.
 
Southern Indiana found their distance game in the second and drilled six of seven three-point attempts to trail at half 51-44. 
 
Truman would take a 66-62 lead into the final quarter but then things turned sideways for the Bulldogs. Their last made basket was at the 8:15 mark and they would miss their last eight shots from the field.
 
Meanwhile, the Screaming Eagles finally got over the hump with a basket from Ashlynn Brown with 1:27 left to play to put USI up 78-77.
 
Addy Blackwell would convert on a free throw with 54 seconds left to put the lead at two. 
 
Katie Jaseckas made one of her two freebies looking for the tie with 35 ticks showing.
 
The Bulldogs played it straight up before Emma DeHart made a shot inside the paint with nine seconds on the clock to extend the lead to three at 81-78.
 
Truman's last attempt for a tie came from Belanger and it rattled the iron before falling off.
 
Belanger finished with six treys for 25 points. Katey Klucking knocked down five triples and scored 22 points and Ellie Weltha recorded another double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Weltha made all six of her field goal attempts.
 
Brown led all USI scorers with 17 points. Meredith Raley provided the spark off the bench for the Screaming Eagles with three triples and 13 points. USI turned the ball over twice while Truman had 14 turnovers. 
 
Truman falls to 4-2 overall while Southern Indiana improves to 6-1.
 
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday at home against William Jewell. Game time is slated for 5:15 p.m.
