KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Soccer team suffered a grueling 2-1 defeat to rival Quincy on Friday afternoon, after looking primed to take their first points of the season. The teams went to the half tied at one but a 78th minute goal gave the game to the Hawks.
The game started slowly as the rain drizzled Bulldog Soccer Park. Justin Olwig made his first save of the game for the Bulldogs in the fifth minute as Cole Hayes tested the Truman keeper bottom left. Just a few minutes later, the game picked up as the rain subsided. Olwig stymied Ben Whitmore's effort into the top left of the net to keep the game knotted at zero. Thomas Weber recorded the first shot for the Bulldogs, but it went wide in the 21st minute. Right after, in the 23rd minute, Craig Chisholm put a ball up to Jack Rhead who had his first attempt smothered but a second effort was able to put it in the net. Not long after, in the 33rd minute, Sam Newton played a great aerial ball up to Luke Payne on the attack who raced forward and drilled it into the net to even the game at one.
The second half of the game slowed as physical play picked up. Shots became scarce as the first shot on goal of the half ended up being the game winning goal. Nick Chapman played a ball forward to Cole Hayes who beat Olwig to give Quincy the 2-1 lead with just over 12 minutes to play. Newton had a chance to even the game late in the half, but his effort went just wide. Olwig recorded two more saves in the late stages of the game, but Truman could not find an equalizer.
The Bulldogs will be back at Bulldog Soccer Park Sunday at noon for Senior Day as they host Illinois Springfield at noon.
