Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Olwig’s Heroics Not Enough as UIS Upends Truman

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Soccer team nearly had their first points of the 2021 campaign but a late goal by Conal Gallagher of UIS put them ahead with just over two minutes to go. Olwig made six saves, including a spectacular stop on a penalty shot by Browel Some in the second half, but the game ended 1-0 to UIS.

Olwig made a couple of great saves against Brian Riordan and Rory Carlson in the first half almost back to back as there was a massive scrum in front of the net but Olwig kept the ball out, and then made one more stop against Diego Alcaraz in the late stages of the half. Collin McDonough and Sam Newton both recorded shots in the half but neither were on goal.

In the second half, Some had a chance from just outside the box that hit the crossbar and kept the game scoreless. A foul inside the penalty box gave UIS their penalty shot, and Olwig guessed correctly as he dove to his left and kept the ball out of the net. McDonough had the first Truman shot on goal of the game later in the half, but it was saved by UIS keeper Pijus Petkevicius. As the game was winding down, Thomas Weber had an opportunity for the Bulldogs but his effort to the bottom left was stopped. Moments later Gallagher hit a strike that curled from right to left across the net and bent into the top corner on an effort that Olwig could not stop. Darien Turner picked up the assist.

Truman will face William Jewell in the final home match of the season Friday at noon.
