LIBERTY, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team won their third match in their last five as they defeated William Jewell 3-0 (25-21, 25-20, 25-20), which extended their winning streak over the Cardinals to six straight. Ellie Kaat led Truman with ten kills while Rachel DeFries picked up 18 assists and Macy Vanfossan tallied 13 digs. Allison Beaton tied her career high with seven blocks.
Early on the first set was tightly contested, with neither team being able to gain more than a two point edge on the other. Down 12-10, Truman went on a 6-1 run that gave them their biggest lead of the game at 16-13. Ainsley Heise, Hanna Berry and Kaat picked up kills in the stretch. But WJC fought back, eventually tying the set at 20. Truman took the next two points, but WJC picked up the next one to make it 22-21. The Bulldogs closed the set with three straight points as DeFries and Beaton picked up kills and a Cardinal error ended the set.
WJC opened the second set with a 4-0 run, but Truman fought back to take the lead at 6-5 as Morgan Smith and Berry picked up kills. The Cardinals tied it at a half dozen each but a 7-0 spurt from Truman set the tone for the rest of the set. Katy Motz picked up one of her two aces in the stretch. It was 24-14 Bulldogs before WJC made the set close with a 6-0 run but Morgan Smith finished the set with a kill.
Truman kept the momentum rolling in the third set as they took seven of the first ten points. Two kills from Kaat and another ace by Motz spurred the Bulldogs onto the early lead. Later a 5-0 run, which featured a kill from Beaton and ace by Vanfossan gave Truman a 13-5 lead. From there Truman controlled the rest of the set and led by as many as 13. WJC made another furious attempt to rally at the end of the set, but it was not enough as Smith closed the set and match with a kill.
The Bulldogs will be back at Pershing Arena next weekend as they take on Maryville Friday night at 7 and then host Lindenwood Saturday evening at 6.
