Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

McKendree Stuns Truman With Late Goal

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Men's Soccer team was seconds away from getting their first points of the season when McKendree's James Stone broke the 1-1 tie with 17 seconds remaining in double overtime with a header that propelled the Bearcats to a 2-1 victory.

In the opening stages of the game, McKendree controlled the tempo and had the first few shots of the game, but it was Collin McDonough who had the first shot on goal—coming at the 18 minute mark for the Bulldogs. Truman finally broke through in the 30th minute as Jack Knust played a ball from the right side of the box across to the left side to the awaiting foot of McDonough who beat Alvaro Cortazar for the Bulldog goal. It was the first assist for Knust since this spring against Drury and the first goal for McDonough since 2019 against Northwood.

However, McKendree would strike back at the end of the first half as Feitol Hyke evened the score, and the teams would be tied at one going into intermission. Truman nearly had a second goal before half as Thomas Weber looked like he had curled a ball perfectly under the net but Cortazar kept it out with his right hand—putting it over the crossbar.

Early in the second half, both Knust and McKendree's Eddie Davis had scoring chances, but both were saved. The pace of the game tempered for most of the half, and both teams had chanced to score late as Mac Knudsen had a chance bottom right but it was saved and Davis test Truman keeper Justin Olwig but the Bulldog keeper stood firm.

McDonough had the only shot on goal in the first overtime session, but it was kept out. Simo Valentino and Luke Payne had the first two attempts on net of the second overtime, both were stopped. Davis recorded another shot on goal for McKendree and then in the waning seconds David took a corner kick which Stone headed into the net to seal the game.

The Bulldogs head east for their next two games, playing at Lewis on Friday and then go to Indianapolis to take on the Greyhounds next Sunday.
