Bulldogs Bounce Back, Win Pre-Halloween Thriller in Five Sets Over Lindenwood

KIRKSVILLE, Mo.—The Truman Volleyball team bounced back from a grueling defeat on Friday night to take down the Lindenwood Lions 3-2 (27-29, 25-20, 25-17, 17-25, 15-8) and avenge an earlier loss this season to the Lions. Ellie Kaat led Truman with 14 kills, Rachel DeFries tallied 20 assists and Macy Vanfossan set a new career high with 29 digs. Morgan Smith also set a new career high with 22 digs.

Truman got off to a fast start, jumping out to an 8-1 lead. Kaat picked up two kills and Ainsley Heise picked up an ace. Later in the set Truman held an 18-11 lead following a 4-0 spurt, and held the Lions at bay most of the set. But with Truman up 23-16, Lindenwood reeled off seven straight to tie the set at 23. The teams went back and forth with each having set points, but from a 27 all tie the Lions got two straight to win the set.

Down 4-2 early in the second, Truman once again scored eight of nine points as they raced out to a 10-5 lead. Hanna Berry picked up three kills and Katy Motz picked up an ace. Truman led the rest of the set, leading by as many as eight at 22-14. The Bulldogs closed out the set comfortably to knot up the match.

The third set was tied at seven when Truman made their move. A 7-0 run gave Truman a 14-7 edge, with Kaat picking up two kills and DeFries getting an ace. Truman would lead by as many as nine in the set as they picked up 15 kills as a team in the set to win by eight.

Set number four was tight to begin with, with neither team establishing themselves. With the match at 15-14 Lindenwood, the Lions scored five straight to expand their lead to six. Truman could not catch up as the Lions pushed to a decisive set five.

Rachel DeFries snuck an expected set over the net for a kill to open the set, and the Bulldogs jumped out to a 6-3 lead. Lindenwood pulled within two but Truman reeled off four straight with a kill from Allison Beaton and two aces from Berry. Kate Benzing picked up a kill later in the set and Kaat picked up the final kill to seal the match.

Truman will be back at Pershing Arena next weekend as they host Lewis on Friday night and then Illinois Springfield on Saturday for Senior Day.
